Block Selects Marqeta to Enable Square Credit Card on the American Express Network

Marqeta, the modern card issuing platform, announced that it is now enabling the Square Credit Card, Square's business credit card for sellers, on the American Express® Network. The launch extends Marqeta's longstanding relationship with Block, which already includes Square's debit and prepaid card programs. With the addition, Square's full card portfolio — debit, prepaid, and credit — is supported through Marqeta's platform.

By consolidating debit, prepaid, and credit onto Marqeta's end-to-end platform, Square gains a single platform on which to build and iterate on card products for its sellers. According to the announcement, the consolidation is intended to reduce operational complexity and enable Square to bring new credit features to market more quickly.

Marqeta's portfolio migration capabilities enabled Square to migrate existing accounts and card credentials to Marqeta's platform without disrupting the cardholder experience — a step the companies described as central to the transition.

The partnership between the two companies dates back to 2019, when Square first partnered with Marqeta to introduce the Square Card, a business debit card for small business owners. The debit card gives cardholders immediate access to their earnings without additional fees, enabling them to reinvest those funds directly into their businesses. The newly enabled Square Credit Card, in turn, gives Square sellers access to a credit line that grows with their business volume, building on the foundation laid by the debit offering.

Marqeta's 2026 State of Credit report underscores the demand environment behind the move. According to the report, 96% of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) surveyed are intentional about which payment methods they use for a given transaction, which Marqeta cited as signaling demand for both credit and debit offerings. The research also found that 34% of SMBs surveyed have moved between credit products as their businesses evolved, while 64% want a clear path from entry-level to advanced products — findings that demonstrate the need for credit offerings to keep pace as small businesses grow. Against that backdrop, the consolidation reads as an answer to the progression the data describes: a seller who starts with the Square Card for immediate access to earnings has a route into a credit line that grows with volume, with one platform behind both products.

"Square sellers depend on both credit and debit to run their businesses, and consolidating those programs onto Marqeta's platform means we can move faster and safer on the products they need," said Andrea Raj, Head of Product for Square Banking at Block. "Migrating our existing cardholders without any disruption to their experience was critical, and Marqeta delivered. This is a reflection of the strong partnership we've built together over the years."

Marqeta's commercial credit platform delivers end-to-end capabilities within a single integration, including card issuance and transaction processing, underwriting, rewards management, risk controls, and disputes. The platform gives businesses granular spend controls, flexible account hierarchies, and real-time decisioning powered by more than 300 data attributes, enabling them to build differentiated credit programs tailored to the needs of their customers.

Marqeta also supports full program management — including bank and network partnerships, regulatory and compliance reporting, customer service, and collections — reducing the need for multiple vendors and accelerating time to market for customers. The company said the addition of American Express® to its roster of network partners demonstrates the breadth of its network capability and scale.

For sellers, the near-term development to watch is how quickly that consolidated stack translates into new credit features: Square has said the single-platform approach is intended to bring such capabilities to market more quickly.

"Block is one of our deepest and most expansive partnerships, and the work we're doing together goes well beyond any single program," said Todd Pollak, Chief Revenue Officer at Marqeta. "This launch is a strong example of what that partnership enables, bringing Square's full card portfolio onto one platform so they can build and iterate on credit products for small businesses faster than ever before."
