Mag-iina Wins Best Film at 22nd Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival

The psychological horror film “Mag-iina” took home the trophy for Best Film at the 22nd Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, one of six awards it won during the festival’s awards ceremony held on Aug. 17 at the Shangri-La Plaza.

Directed by Giancarlo Abrahan and written by Guelan Varela Luarca, the film follows three generations of women bound together by grief, madness, and a dark family secret. Its six-award haul also included Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor for Lucas Andalio, Best Production Design, and Best Musical Scoring, making it the most decorated full-length entry of this edition.

Launched in 2005, Cinemalaya has served as the country’s flagship competition for independent Filipino cinema, and its annual winners list doubles as a snapshot of emerging filmmaking talent across both full-length and short-film formats. Shared honors defined this year’s ceremony, with four categories producing two winners each. Abrahan split the Best Director award with Gabriela Serrano, who was recognized for her work on “Elenita Elena Elaine.” The Best Actress trophy went jointly to Ruby Ruiz and Marietta “Pokwang” Subong, Best Supporting Actor was shared by Lucas Andalio and K.D. Omalin, and the Special Jury Prize was divided between “2 Valid IDs” and “Para-paraan.”

Recognition was otherwise spread across the lineup: “Tayo Lang Ang Nakakaalam” earned four awards, led by Best Actor for Martin del Rosario, while “2 Valid IDs” paired its Special Jury Prize with the Audience Choice Award for Full-Length Film, recognition from both the festival jury and its audiences.
