Maritime transportation firm LD Armateurs has launched a new hybrid-electric service operation vessel (SOV) for energy company Vattenfall, adding another purpose-built support ship to the offshore wind supply chain.
Wind of Ocean was launched on August 30 at the ZPMC shipyard in China, and is the first of two SOVs being built for Vattenfall, the company said in an announcement yesterday.
The vessel is due for delivery in 2027 and will support operations at the DanTysk and Sandbank offshore wind farms in the North Sea, where service vessels play a central role in moving technicians, tools and equipment to turbines.
The 90 m vessel will combine diesel generators with a larger battery energy storage system, helping reduce fuel consumption, emissions and onboard noise.
Developed with SALT Ship Design, the SOV will accommodate up to 96 people and feature four azimuth thrusters and a double-ended design.
It will also be fitted with a motion-compensated gangway for safe transfers of technicians and equipment to offshore turbines.
