Cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin said its Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS) has received ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification. The standard, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in December 2023, is described as the first internationally recognized certifiable framework for AI management systems, setting out requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving how an organization governs AI. KuCoin said the milestone reflects its efforts to develop Trusted AI through accountable governance practices, strengthening its Trust Framework and supporting its goal of providing secure, transparent, and reliable digital asset infrastructure.
As AI becomes more deeply embedded in digital financial systems, its use has expanded well beyond operational efficiency. According to the company, AI now supports a growing range of core platform functions, including risk management, anti-money laundering protocols, fraud detection, market surveillance, client support, product analytics, and automated workflows. As AI capabilities advance, governance expectations have also increased. Those expectations are being shaped by regulators as well as standards bodies: the European Union’s AI Act entered into force in August 2024 with phased obligations for providers and deployers of AI systems, and the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation began applying to crypto-asset service providers across the bloc at the end of 2024, alongside continued anti-money-laundering enforcement against exchanges in the United States, where KuCoin’s operating companies pleaded guilty in January 2025 to unlicensed money transmitting and Bank Secrecy Act violations and agreed to pay nearly $300 million and exit the U.S. market for at least two years. KuCoin said Trusted AI is no longer judged solely by technical performance, and now requires clear accountability, openness, ongoing monitoring, and ethical governance across the full AI lifecycle. The company said ISO/IEC 42001 provides that foundation and is becoming an important benchmark for the digital asset sector.
KuCoin said its certified Artificial Intelligence Management System supports its global digital asset exchange and financial services ecosystem by promoting the ethical implementation, oversight, and continued improvement of AI across its business processes. The certification covers both the AI management system and the organizational units that support it, confirming that AI operations are managed within a systematic and globally recognized governance structure. Like other ISO management-system standards, conformity is assessed through third-party audit, with documented requirements that include AI impact assessments and defined accountability for AI systems across their lifecycle.
Governance Standards and Strategic Commitment
“AI is becoming a foundational capability of digital financial infrastructure, but greater capability must be matched by greater responsibility,” said BC Wong, CEO of KuCoin, in a written statement. “We believe the future of the industry will not be defined simply by more advanced AI, but by more trusted AI. Achieving ISO/IEC 42001 demonstrates our commitment to embedding responsible AI governance into the way we build, deploy and operate AI across our platform. As we continue to innovate, we remain equally committed to ensuring that every AI capability is transparent, accountable and designed to strengthen user trust,” he added.
ISO/IEC 42001 is the newest addition to KuCoin’s Trust Framework. The platform already holds ISO/IEC 27001 certification for information security, SOC 2 Type II attestation for operational dependability, and ISO 22301 certification for business continuity and operational resilience. KuCoin said ISO/IEC 42001 adds a dedicated governance structure for AI. The certifiable standard sits alongside widely used but non-certifiable governance references such as the OECD AI Principles and the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology’s AI Risk Management Framework, which many organizations use to structure their AI risk practices.
Together, these standards form a multi-layered foundation intended to reinforce security, resilience, transparency, and responsible innovation across the platform. As artificial intelligence continues to reshape the digital asset landscape, KuCoin said it plans to continue advancing Trusted AI through internationally recognized governance protocols, ensuring that AI develops not only in capability but also in reliability.
