KSNET Partners With Solana Foundation to Bring Solana Pay to 330,000 Korean Merchants
Key Takeaways
- •KSNET and the Solana Foundation signed an MOU to integrate Solana Pay into KSNET's network of more than 330,000 merchants that process approximately 130 million monthly transactions.
- •The partnership includes testing the x402 protocol, which enables AI agents to autonomously conduct micropayments for API-based services without traditional payment intermediaries.
- •The proof-of-concept will incorporate anti-money laundering measures and comply with South Korea's financial regulations, including the Virtual Asset User Protection Act effective since July 2024.
- •KSNET previously partnered with Crypto.com in May 2025 to facilitate cryptocurrency transactions for foreign tourists at retail outlets across South Korea.
- •A successful proof-of-concept could lead to phased commercial rollout of blockchain payments, reinforcing Solana's strategic shift from decentralized finance toward mainstream payment infrastructure.

South Korean payment processor KSNET has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Solana Foundation to develop next-generation digital asset payment infrastructure, marking a significant step in Solana's expansion into real-world payments.
The partnership will integrate Solana Pay into KSNET's merchant network while exploring AI-powered payment models using the emerging x402 protocol. The initiative could become one of South Korea's largest blockchain payment projects. KSNET serves more than 330,000 merchants, processes approximately 130 million transactions each month, and handles nearly $4 billion in monthly payment volume. If commercialized, the integration would substantially expand Solana's presence in one of Asia's most advanced digital payment markets.

Integrating Blockchain Into an Established Payments Network
The first phase of the collaboration will demonstrate the integration of Solana Pay within the payment infrastructure KSNET has built over 26 years. The objective is not to replace existing payment rails but rather to incorporate blockchain payments into KSNET's established merchant network. Solana Pay, launched in 2022 as a standardized protocol for direct crypto-to-merchant payments on the Solana blockchain, enables settlements denominated in stablecoins or other digital assets without traditional card network intermediaries.
Compliance is a central component of the project. KSNET stated that the proof-of-concept will incorporate robust anti-money laundering (AML) measures while adhering to South Korea's financial regulations. The companies also plan to integrate digital asset settlements into the existing Korean Won settlement network to address exchange rate volatility and liquidity challenges. The compliance focus is particularly significant given South Korea's evolving regulatory landscape, which includes the Virtual Asset User Protection Act that took effect in July 2024, establishing investor protection rules and designating the Financial Services Commission as the primary regulator for digital asset service providers.
KSNET CEO Park Hankook said the firm would leverage its decades of payments experience to deliver a trustworthy digital asset payment system.
AI-Powered Payments and the x402 Protocol
The collaboration also includes testing of x402, an internet-native payment protocol that enables AI agents to autonomously conduct micropayments for API-based services without relying on credit cards or human verification. As AI-driven technologies continue to advance, machine-to-machine (M2M) payments are emerging as a promising application for blockchain. Solana's ability to settle transactions quickly and efficiently positions it as a strong candidate for handling such micropayments.
Building on KSNET's Prior Crypto Initiatives
The Solana partnership follows KSNET's May 2025 agreement with Crypto.com, under which Crypto.com facilitates cryptocurrency transactions for foreign tourists at major retail outlets across South Korea and accepts the Crypto.com Visa Card on Jeju's transport network.
For Solana, the cooperation reinforces its strategic shift from decentralized finance toward more conventional payment infrastructure. While the MOU is focused on proof-of-concept testing rather than immediate commercial deployment, a successful outcome could open new avenues for Solana's expansion and signals growing institutional confidence in blockchain-based payment systems.
Next Steps
Solana Pay and x402 will undergo proof-of-concept testing conducted jointly by KSNET and the Solana Foundation. If the tests prove successful, the partners plan to roll out blockchain payments in a phased manner aligned with the requirements of South Korea's financial market environment.
