Kraken Parent Payward Buys AAVE Tokens, Says Further Purchases May Continue
Kraken's parent company, Payward, and its asset management clients have purchased AAVE, the governance token of the decentralized lending protocol Aave, as part of their decentralized finance (DeFi) investments.
In a Nov. 6 announcement, Payward said the purchases were made through Digital Asset Special Investments I, LP, a fund linked to the company, together with its asset management clients. The tokens were acquired on the secondary market rather than purchased directly from Aave. Payward did not disclose the number of tokens bought or the dollar size of the investment, but it indicated that additional purchases may follow.
Because AAVE functions as the protocol's governance token, the purchase ties the fund and its clients to more than the token's market value: governance token holders can weigh in on the decisions that determine how Aave operates and evolves.
Long-Term Conviction in On-Chain Lending
Gurpreet Oberoi, Payward's head of asset management and corporate services, said the investment reflects the firm's long-term belief in on-chain lending markets and DeFi. Oberoi also noted growing demand from clients to invest in infrastructure in this sector.
Kraken, one of the longest-running cryptocurrency exchanges, operates under parent company Payward. The move extends the firm's asset management operations into DeFi, a sector in which users lend and borrow digital assets through automated smart contracts rather than traditional intermediaries. For an exchange group with Kraken's history, the purchase connects its asset management business to protocol-level DeFi activity rather than trading alone, and it does so through a dedicated fund vehicle alongside asset management clients.
Kulechov Cites Strategic Step for Aave
Stani Kulechov, founder of Aave Labs, said that working with Payward is a strategic step in reaching more individual and corporate users with Aave.
Aave is a decentralized lending protocol that allows users to supply crypto assets to earn yield and borrow against them. The announcement noted that Aave has approximately $33 billion in net deposits and $11 billion in active loans — figures that give a sense of the scale of the lending activity standing behind the token Payward's clients have bought, and of the market Payward's asset management arm is now entering.
June Discussions Included Equity
Aave Group shares were also discussed within a broader transaction that the two parties considered in June. However, today's announcement detailed only the token purchases. Whether those broader discussions progress beyond token purchases is not addressed in the Nov. 6 announcement.
