Kjwan Marks 20 Years of '2 Step Marv' with Full-Album Concert and First Vinyl Release

Two decades after releasing its acclaimed sophomore album 2 Step Marv, Filipino rock band Kjwan is bringing the record back to the forefront with a full-album concert performance and its first-ever vinyl pressing. The anniversary arrives amid a broader resurgence of interest in physical music formats and catalog reissues across the Philippine independent music scene, as a new generation of listeners rediscovers seminal 2000s OPM (Original Pilipino Music) rock releases.

Kjwan has been a defining voice in Pinoy rock since 2003, earning recognition for explosive live shows and emotionally charged songwriting. Hits such as "One Look" and "Pintura," both from 2 Step Marv, have endured as fan favorites. Now, the band is set to perform the album in its entirety for the first time.

The anniversary concert, titled 2(0) Step Marv, will take place on Aug. 14 at 123 Block Aster, Mandaluyong City. The band's current lineup — lead vocalist Marc Abaya, bassist Kelley Mangahas, drummer Eo Marcos, and guitarist Louis Isok — will carry out the full-album playthrough.

"The writing of our second album was completely different from our first one," Mr. Abaya said at a press conference on Aug. 7. "In a way, it forced us to push one another as musicians to be better at our craft. In that dark room, we created an album that had a moodier vibe, the songs had a lot more texture, structure, and emotional intention."

Building on the success of Kjwan's self-titled debut album and the hit single "Daliri," 2 Step Marv is widely credited with sustaining the band's momentum. The album also helped propel Kjwan onto the international stage, with performances at festivals including Baybeats in Singapore and the Hush Festival in Macau. That cross-border visibility placed Kjwan among a cadre of Filipino rock acts in the mid-2000s who helped expand the reach of Pinoy rock beyond domestic audiences.

Guest Acts and Commemoration

The anniversary concert will feature guest performances by Mayonnaise, Dilaw, and DJ Chain Messages, each presenting special sets highlighting deep cuts from their respective catalogs. The billing bridges distinct eras of the local scene: Mayonnaise rose to prominence in the same mid-2000s wave as Kjwan, while Dilaw represents a more recent crop of Filipino acts gaining traction with younger audiences.

Adding to the celebration, independent label Backspacer Records is releasing 2 Step Marv on vinyl for the first time. The pressing taps into a global vinyl revival that has seen record sales climb steadily over the past decade, with independent labels in Southeast Asia increasingly investing in physical releases to meet collector demand. Fans who purchase the new pressing will receive free admission to the concert.

The event is co-produced by 123 Block and indie production house SYQL Productions, and is intended as the first in a series aimed at reinvigorating the local music scene.

"There's a market for Kjwan among the younger generations, and through this event they'll get to know 2 Step Marv. Hopefully the music from that time stays relevant. It plays a huge part in supporting the vibrant music scene today, to know what came before," 123 Block owner Mitch Singson told BusinessWorld.

While concerts and festivals have been held at the venue's outdoor space for several years, its indoor facility, the Aster Events Place, opened earlier this year. Mr. Singson said they have long been working to establish it as a hub for musicians, initially hosting friends before opening more broadly to the public.

What Fans Can Expect

"Fans definitely can't miss the concert because it's their chance to see how Kjwan has matured," said Mr. Singson, who has known the band since its early days. "Mas gumaling pa sila ngayon (They've improved even more now)."

He noted that the guest acts were specifically asked to prioritize lesser-known fan favorites over their biggest hits. "We requested them to do that," he said. "Magiging mas masaya (It will be more fun)."

The 2 Step Marv vinyl release will be a clear pressing in gatefold format, with individually numbered copies. Cassettes and limited-edition vinyl test pressings of the album are also available.

The band promises that the early 2000s grit of the album will come through in the live performance.

"We're preparing hard for it, and we're definitely going to share songs from that era, a lot of our hits, and some unreleased material too, in a different way," Mr. Abaya said. "It's going to be a really good show."

Pre-sale tickets are priced at P800 and are available at bit.ly/20STEPMARV. Walk-in tickets at the venue cost P1,000. Purchasing the vinyl record, priced at P2,900, grants free access to the event.
