Kia Sportage Returns to the Philippines with Turbo Hybrid Powertrain

Kia has been experiencing a resurgence in the Philippine market. The brand posted strong sales figures last year, driven by well-received models including the new Carnival, the Sorento, and the budget-friendly Sonet. Building on that momentum, Kia Philippines has rolled out a series of new vehicle launches throughout 2026, the latest of which marks the reintroduction of one of the brand's top-selling nameplates. The Sportage had previously been available in the Philippines before being phased out, and its return fills a gap in Kia's local SUV lineup between the subcompact Sonet and the larger Sorento.

The 2027 model-year Kia Sportage Turbo Hybrid returns a beloved model to the Philippine lineup. Among all vehicles in Kia's global portfolio, the Sportage holds the distinction of being the longest-lived nameplate, with over 30 years of continuous production and worldwide sales. Across that span, the Sportage has surpassed eight million units sold globally, making it Kia's best-selling SUV of all time.

Pricing and Variants

Kia Philippines is positioning the new Sportage aggressively on value. The 2027 Sportage is offered in two variants: the entry-level EX, priced at P1.978 million, and the higher-tier SX, priced at P2.098 million. Both prices are designed to significantly undercut competitors in the same segment, which includes established hybrid and electrified compact SUVs such as the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid and the Honda CR-V e:HEV, both of which typically carry higher sticker prices in the Philippine market.

Exterior Design

The new Sportage adopts Kia's "Opposites United" design language, incorporating the angular and geometric styling elements seen across the brand's current lineup. The overall aesthetic leans toward a bold, modern appearance rather than a conservative one.

Exterior features include LED projector foglamps and a hands-free tailgate that opens automatically when the key is in proximity, facilitating easier cargo loading. Four paint options are available: Heritage Blue, Wolf Grey, Snow White Pearl, and Gravity Grey. The SX variant is offered in all four colors, while the EX is limited to Wolf Grey, Snow White Pearl, and Gravity Grey.

Interior and Technology

The cabin continues the modern design theme, blending aesthetics with technology. A 12.3-inch display screen houses both the digital instrument cluster and the infotainment system, the latter featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Device charging is available through USB ports or a cooled wireless charging pad. The SX variant is equipped with a premium Harman Kardon sound system.

Powertrain and Performance

Now in its fifth generation, the Sportage has been updated to offer electrified mobility. Both variants are powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged hybrid drivetrain paired with a 1.49-kWh lithium-ion battery. The system produces a class-leading 235 horsepower and 357 Nm of torque, delivered through a six-speed automatic transmission. According to Kia, the Sportage is capable of approximately 1,000 kilometers of total driving range — a figure that holds particular appeal in the Philippines, where electrified vehicles benefit from exemptions under the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA), including exemption from the Metro Manila number-coding scheme.

Safety and Warranty

Safety features are anchored by Kia's DriveWise advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), which includes adaptive cruise control among other technologies. The Sportage also comes with a comprehensive warranty package: a five-year or 160,000-kilometer vehicle warranty, and an eight-year or 160,000-kilometer battery warranty. The battery coverage, in particular, aligns with the industry standard for electrified vehicle warranties, offering reassurance to buyers concerned about long-term hybrid system reliability.
