Kainos Capital (“Kainos”), a Dallas-based private equity firm investing in established products and services companies across the food and everyday essentials ecosystem, said Brooks Thomas has returned to the firm as a vice president after earning his MBA.
Thomas joined Kainos in 2021 and previously served as an associate and senior associate before attending the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. In his new role, he will be involved in evaluating, executing, and managing portfolio companies, and will also help lead associate recruiting and development activities. Returning to a former employer after business school — sometimes called a “boomerang” hire — is an established path in private equity, where firms frequently re-hire former associates who complete their MBAs at more senior ranks.
Kainos also said Catherine Shih and Peyton Peterson joined the firm as associates this summer, while Jacob Askew and Justin Potwora were promoted from associate to senior associate. Staffing announcements of this kind are a routine way mid-market private equity firms communicate the depth of their deal teams, though Kainos did not tie the moves to any specific transaction.
Andrew Rosen, managing partner of Kainos, said: “We are pleased to welcome three talented deal professionals to the team and to recognize the hard work of two of our colleagues with well-deserved promotions. We are especially proud to have Brooks Thomas re-join the firm. Brooks demonstrated a strong work ethic and investment acumen during his first tenure as a member of the Kainos team, and we are confident he will continue to contribute to our Firm and portfolio companies as a Vice President.”
Kainos Capital is a middle-market private equity firm focused on the food and essential products and services ecosystem — a corner of the consumer staples arena where demand tends to be comparatively steady across economic cycles, a characteristic that has long drawn private equity interest to the sector. The firm said its team has extensive investment and operating experience in the industry, having invested approximately $3 billion of equity in more than 45 transactions with a total transaction value of over $7 billion. As with most personnel announcements, the practical effect of the expanded team will become visible through the firm's subsequent investment and exit announcements rather than the hiring news itself.
