IREN Shares Surge 12% on Microsoft Horizon 1 Delivery and Nvidia Exemplar Cloud Designation
IREN Ltd. shares climbed more than 12% in Thursday morning trading after the AI cloud infrastructure provider announced two major milestones: the completion of the first phase of its large-scale Microsoft deployment and the achievement of Nvidia Exemplar Cloud status.
Horizon 1 Delivered Under $9.7 Billion Microsoft Agreement
IREN confirmed it has completed delivery of Horizon 1, the initial installment of four planned 50-megawatt direct-to-chip liquid-cooled AI cloud deployments being constructed for Microsoft at IREN's Childress, Texas campus. The project falls under a five-year, $9.7 billion cloud services agreement with Microsoft announced in November 2025.
Direct-to-chip liquid cooling has become a critical differentiator in next-generation AI data centers, where dense GPU clusters such as Nvidia's GB300 NVL72 generate thermal loads that exceed what conventional air cooling can efficiently manage. By circulating coolant directly to the chip package, operators can support higher rack densities and reduce energy overhead — a capability that hyperscalers increasingly require for frontier AI workloads.
"The rapid delivery of Horizon 1 to Microsoft reflects the agility of IREN's vertically integrated model, which provides end-to-end control across design, engineering and construction of the data centers supporting its GPU deployments," the company said in a statement.
The remaining three Horizon deployments are slated for completion later this year under the Microsoft contract.
Nvidia Exemplar Cloud Status
IREN also disclosed that Horizon 1 attained Nvidia Exemplar Cloud status after the chipmaker evaluated the company's Nvidia GB300 NVL72 deployment. The designation indicates that the infrastructure meets Nvidia's performance and operational benchmarks for next-generation AI computing. Nvidia maintains a select group of Exemplar Cloud partners whose facilities serve as reference designs for the company's AI platform ecosystem, a designation that can strengthen a provider's positioning with enterprise and lab customers seeking certified infrastructure.
The company reaffirmed its roadmap to expand its AI cloud platform to 480 MW of gross capacity in 2026, scaling to 1.2 gigawatts in 2027.
Executive Commentary
Daniel Roberts, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of IREN, emphasized the significance of the delivery:
"Delivering Horizon 1 demonstrates the strength of our vertically integrated model and our ability to execute complex AI infrastructure projects at speed and scale. I want to congratulate and thank the more than 3,000 people across our site team whose expertise, commitment and execution made this milestone possible. We look forward to building on this momentum with Microsoft as we work to deliver Horizons 2-4 later this year."
Broader AI Infrastructure Tailwinds
IREN's stock has gained approximately 22% over the past five trading sessions, buoyed by widening optimism across the AI infrastructure sector.
Earlier this week, Nvidia — one of IREN's major shareholders — unveiled a $500 billion financing initiative alongside investment firms including BlackRock and Blackstone aimed at supporting companies building AI infrastructure. The program is expected to expand funding access for firms requiring significant capital to construct GPU data centers.
Industry-wide demand has also underpinned sentiment. Riot Platforms recently secured a $9 billion agreement with Anthropic, while AI cloud provider CoreWeave reported second-quarter revenue of $2.6 billion, more than double the year-ago figure, with its backlog swelling to $104 billion.
Analyst Outlook
Wall Street has broadly sustained a positive stance on IREN, notwithstanding debate over its capital-intensive operating model.
Bernstein SocGen Group reiterated an Outperform rating with a $100 price target, representing more than 100% upside from current levels. The brokerage noted lingering investor skepticism about whether former Bitcoin miners can successfully pivot to AI cloud provision — particularly IREN, which is investing heavily in owning and operating infrastructure rather than adopting a lower-cost colocation leasing approach.
However, Bernstein contended that in an environment of scarce AI computing capacity, IREN's strategy may prove considerably more lucrative. The firm estimated that IREN's AI cloud model could generate $10 million to $20 million per megawatt, versus roughly $2 million to $2.5 million per megawatt through traditional colocation leasing.
Bernstein also cited recent earnings from Nebius as evidence that IREN can move further up the AI cloud value chain while closing its technology gap.
Last month, IREN announced new multi-year AI cloud contracts valued at $2.8 billion and raised its 2026 year-end AI Cloud annual recurring revenue target to more than $4 billion, up from $3.7 billion. Approximately 85% of the revised target — about $3.4 billion — has already been contracted, encompassing agreements with Microsoft, Nvidia, AI laboratories, and a major unnamed AI developer.
Several brokerages have since reaffirmed positive ratings. HC Wainwright maintained a Buy rating with a $90 price target, Compass Point reiterated Buy with a $105 target, and Citizens retained a Market Outperform rating with an $80 price target. Goldman Sachs maintained a Neutral rating with a $50 target, while Needham continued at Hold.
Investors are now focused on developments ahead of IREN's earnings report, expected in just over a month.
