This architecture is used for Apple Pay transactions and is intended to provide an additional security layer for payment data.
For years, direct access to Apple's NFC payment functions was limited to Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. Other payment providers and wallet apps generally had to operate through Apple's systems rather than using the NFC chip independently for their own payment flows. That restriction made Apple one of the only smartphone makers that did not allow third-party apps general access to NFC payment functionality, a contrast with Android devices, which have supported host card emulation for contactless payments since 2014.
Apple's 2024 NFC Access Changes
Apple's NFC policy changed in 2024 after regulatory pressure in the European Union over competition in mobile payments. The European Commission had been investigating Apple since 2022 over whether restricting NFC access to Apple Pay constituted anticompetitive conduct. Apple was also designated a gatekeeper under the EU Digital Markets Act, which took effect in 2024 and imposed obligations on large platforms to ensure interoperability and fair competition. In a limited sense, crypto payments through NFC on the iPhone 16 Pro are possible. Circle, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, has publicly discussed using Apple's opened NFC access to support direct USDC tap-to-pay transactions.
Under such a model, a point-of-sale terminal could transmit a payment amount to an iPhone, the user could confirm the transaction with Face ID, and the payment could settle on-chain rather than through a traditional card network. Smaller Web3 payment apps have also developed NFC-based tools using the same new access.
Even so, the capability remains early-stage. As of mid-2026, broad merchant acceptance of NFC crypto payments is not standard in the United States. In practice, much crypto spending still occurs through crypto debit cards that are added to Apple Wallet and then used through Apple Pay's existing payment infrastructure. That approach differs from a wallet app using NFC natively for a direct crypto or stablecoin transaction. The distinction matters because direct NFC crypto payments bypass card network fees and intermediaries, which is one reason stablecoin issuers and Web3 payment startups have pursued the capability.
Hardware Wallets Are the More Established Use Case
The most mature use of NFC for crypto on the iPhone 16 Pro is not retail payment. It is hardware wallet authentication.
NFC-based hardware wallets such as Tangem allow users to tap a physical card or device against the back of an iPhone to sign a transaction. In this setup, the phone's NFC chip acts as a communication bridge between the wallet device and the mobile app. It is not functioning as a checkout payment terminal.
This model is different from Bluetooth-based hardware wallets such as the Ledger Nano X, which connect to a phone wirelessly through Bluetooth rather than through a physical tap. Both approaches are designed to keep private keys on a dedicated external device instead of on the phone itself. NFC-based wallets avoid the pairing process and battery requirements associated with Bluetooth devices. The emphasis on keeping keys offline reflects a broader shift in the crypto industry toward self-custody, where users hold their own private keys rather than entrusting them to exchanges, a practice that gained attention following several high-profile exchange failures in 2022.
For iPhone 16 Pro users interacting with crypto, this NFC hardware wallet workflow is currently more established than direct NFC payments at merchants.
iPhone 16 Pro Specifications and Availability
Beyond NFC, the iPhone 16 Pro includes a 6.3-inch display, Apple's A18 Pro chip, a 48-megapixel main camera, upgraded telephoto capability compared with the standard iPhone 16, and a titanium body. Apple launched the iPhone 16 Pro in September 2024 alongside the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
As of 2026, the iPhone 16 Pro is no longer Apple's current flagship model. The iPhone 17 Pro took that position after launching in September 2025. Apple reintroduced the iPhone 16 Pro through its refurbished store in February 2026 at reduced pricing.
