RBI Support Keeps Indian Rupee Stable Despite Importer Dollar Demand

The Indian rupee showed little movement on Wednesday, trading within a narrow range as support from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) offset rising dollar demand from importers.

According to the report, the central bank's backstop helped blunt the impact of importer dollar buying, which has been growing in the currency market. Fluctuations in oil prices and U.S. Treasury yields also played a role in the currency's stability. The RBI routinely intervenes in the foreign exchange market, buying and selling dollars to smooth excessive volatility in the rupee, and such intervention is a long-standing tool in its policy framework.

Oil prices are a key variable for the rupee because India imports the bulk of its crude oil requirements, and higher oil prices increase dollar outflows and import costs, adding pressure on the currency. Likewise, U.S. Treasury yields influence global capital flows, with higher yields typically strengthening the dollar against emerging-market currencies.

Experts cited in the report said the rupee is expected to maintain its current position as long as oil prices remain below the $100-per-barrel mark.
