- •IEX electricity trading volume hit a record 13,938 million units in August, rising 20.2% year-on-year.
- •IEX shares rose about 2% on Friday following the record volume announcement.
- •Higher power demand lifted buy bids and prices on the Day-Ahead Market, which supports IEX's fee-based realisations.

- •IEX remains India's dominant short-term power trading platform despite competition from newer exchanges such as HPX.

Shares of Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) rose about 2% on Friday after the exchange reported a record monthly electricity trading volume in August, giving investors a fresh data point on power demand trends in India.
Record trading volume
IEX said its electricity trading volume reached 13,938 million units (MUs) in August, an all-time monthly high and an increase of 20.2% compared with the same month a year earlier. The surge was driven by higher power demand, which lifted buy bids on the exchange's Day-Ahead Market (DAM), the platform where electricity is traded for delivery the following day. Prices on the market also increased during the month, according to the exchange.
The August record comes amid a broader stretch of elevated electricity demand across India, where consumption has repeatedly scaled new highs during peak summer months, straining supply and pushing buyers toward short-term markets like the exchange to meet gaps. Higher DAM prices can also influence IEX's realisations, since the exchange earns fees on the value of trades cleared on its platforms.
REC volumes decline
Not all segments shared in the growth. Trading volumes for Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) fell sharply amid lower participation, declining 86.6% year-on-year in August. RECs are tradeable certificates that allow obligated entities—such as electricity distributors and large consumers—to meet renewable purchase obligations (RPOs) set by regulators, and participation in REC auctions can fluctuate significantly depending on compliance cycles and policy changes.
Background
IEX is India's leading electricity trading platform, allowing power generators, distribution companies, and industrial consumers to buy and sell electricity through electronic auctions. Trading volumes on the exchange are closely watched as an indicator of electricity demand and supply conditions across the country, and monthly volume reports often move the company's share price. The exchange also faces competition from newer platforms such as Hindustan Power Exchange (HPX), though IEX continues to dominate the short-term power market. Investors will be watching upcoming monthly volume reports and any regulatory changes affecting market fees or REC rules for further cues on the business.
