IBM (NYSE: IBM) shares declined 0.39% to $235.05 on August 13, 2026, as the company unveiled a broad enterprise artificial intelligence partnership with OpenAI. The stock had earlier retreated from session highs near $240 before extending its intraday losses following the announcement.

The agreement will integrate GPT-5.6 and other OpenAI products into IBM Consulting services for major corporate and government clients. The partnership adds OpenAI's frontier models to IBM's existing AI portfolio, which includes its watsonx platform for enterprise AI deployment, positioning IBM alongside competitors such as Microsoft, Google Cloud, and Amazon Web Services that have been racing to embed generative AI into large-scale corporate environments.

Joint Enterprise AI Solutions Across Key Industries

IBM and OpenAI will jointly develop AI solutions targeting financial services, government, telecommunications, and retail organizations. The companies will also pursue joint sales programs while developing industry-specific solutions. IBM's consulting network is expected to support deployments from initial planning through full operational implementation.

Dedicated OpenAI Practice and Application Modernization

IBM will establish a dedicated OpenAI Practice staffed by thousands of consultants and engineers who will undergo specialized training. These professionals will be trained through the OpenAI Partner Network and associated certification programs. IBM will additionally deploy specialized engineering teams directly to client sites during advanced AI system implementations.

These teams will concentrate on organizations operating in complex environments where governance, security, and compliance requirements shape technology deployment decisions. IBM plans to assist clients in redesigning legacy processes prior to introducing automated workflows and advanced models — connecting OpenAI's technology with IBM's deep experience in enterprise infrastructure and regulated industries.

Application modernization represents another significant component of the partnership. IBM will pair Codex with its technology and industry expertise to support software development and the upgrading of legacy applications. Expanded Cybersecurity Collaboration

IBM and OpenAI will deepen their existing cybersecurity collaboration through enterprise security programs. IBM had previously joined OpenAI's Daybreak Cyber Partner Program, which applies frontier AI models to cyber defense. The expanded agreement will connect those capabilities with IBM Autonomous Security and other IBM security services.

IBM designed Autonomous Security to coordinate threat intelligence, decision-making, and security responses through multiple specialized agents. The companies plan to address application vulnerabilities, governance weaknesses, operational threats, and risks associated with enterprise AI model deployment — targeting organizations that require enhanced security controls as they scale artificial intelligence across critical systems.

The agreement builds on IBM's longstanding push toward enterprise automation, hybrid cloud services, and consulting-led technology transformation.
