Huawei has officially launched the HUAWEI Mate XT 2 | ULTIMATE DESIGN, a new entry in its tri-fold lineup that introduces several industry firsts. Unveiled on September 7, the device is the first smartphone to feature the LogicFolding Tau (τ) Chip, marking that chip's entry into mass commercialization. It also debuts the Kirin 9050 Pro chip and a wing-like tri-fold design, extending the boundaries of aesthetics, craftsmanship, and innovation. The original Mate XT, launched in September 2024, was the industry's first commercial tri-fold smartphone, and this successor arrives as competition in the foldable segment intensifies, with Samsung and other Chinese vendors also pushing larger and more durable folding form factors.

At its core, the Mate XT 2 runs on the Kirin 9050 Pro, which Huawei says delivers a dual leap in performance and energy efficiency. Through deep collaboration across hardware, software, chips, and cloud, overall device performance improves by 42% over the previous generation. The LinxiCore CPU, paired with the Ultra-smooth HUAWEI Ark Engine, speeds up loading of large files and boosts performance when running multiple apps simultaneously. The Maleoon GPU doubles its computing units and cache, significantly enhancing rendering performance, and supports 50 MRPS hardware-level real-time ray tracing for immersive gaming. The HUAWEI Da Vinci Architecture NPU delivers a leap in on-device AI computing power, natively supporting the Pangu 30B-A2B MoE LLM and enabling smart experiences such as on-device AI album management with Celia. The continued use of Huawei's in-house Kirin silicon and on-device large language models reflects the company's push toward technological self-sufficiency in semiconductors and AI software amid longstanding US export restrictions.

A standout feature is the industry's first foldable Smart Shield Privacy Screen, providing hardware-level privacy protection on a foldable device. Its independent dual-pixel design keeps screen resolution consistent before and after Privacy mode is activated. Intelligent sensing supplies smart reminders when entering airports or train stations, and the feature can be triggered by double-tapping the cover screen or pressing the Smart controls button.

The phone also introduces the Xuanwu Ultra-Durable Tri-Fold Architecture, which re-engineers hinge and screen technology for layered protection. It is the first tri-fold phone to support IP58/59 dust and water resistance. The cover screen, made of Xuanwu Kunlun Glass, resists scratches and impacts and includes anti-glare technology for readability in direct sunlight. The main screen uses a multi-layer composite ultra-tough structure combining a large UTG glass layer, aerospace-grade ultra-thin high-strength steel, and a carbon fiber support layer. The Advanced Precision Hinge System 2.0 uses a 5 curved arm structure to distribute force evenly and withstand pressure reliably. Durability has been one of the main barriers to wider foldable adoption, as moving hinges and bending displays remain more vulnerable to wear than conventional smartphones, a challenge the layered materials here are designed to address.

On the imaging side, the Mate XT 2 is the first to carry the True-to-Color Camera 3.0, which filters out infrared light interference and improves color reproduction by 95% compared to the previous generation. The camera system includes an ultra-HDR main camera, an ultra-wide aperture periscope telephoto camera, and an ultra-wide angle camera, delivering true-to-life colors and clear night shots. Video recording supports an ultra-high dynamic range of 18 EV. XMAGE SmartCapture has been upgraded with scene recognition and supports AIGC real-time previews offering composition and lighting recommendations. The tri-fold form also enables Desk-calendar mode shooting, making selfies and group photos easier to capture.

The device runs HarmonyOS 7, which redefines large-screen interaction with Live-Multitask capability, supporting three windows displayed in parallel with adjustable sizes and independent volume control. This large-screen experience spans core scenarios including financial management, social entertainment, smart office work, shopping comparison, and travel guides, and has been deeply adapted to leading industry apps to drive the tri-fold large-screen ecosystem forward. Building out HarmonyOS app support is central to Huawei's strategy, since the ecosystem's strength relative to Android and iOS has been a key consideration for buyers of Huawei devices since the company shifted fully to its homegrown operating system.

For health, the Mate XT 2 includes ECG analysis software that has obtained the NMPA Class II Medical Device Registration Certificate. Users can start an ECG measurement by holding the unfolded large screen with both hands, and Celia interprets and analyzes the report. For security, the Mobile Security Processor works with an independent security chip to enable post-quantum cryptography algorithm detection and has passed EAL5+ CCRC security certification.

The HUAWEI Mate XT 2 | ULTIMATE DESIGN starts at RMB 19,999 and will be sold alongside a stylus set, with official sales beginning at 10:08 on September 12. That pricing positions the device firmly in the ultra-premium tier, well above mainstream flagship smartphones, consistent with the original Mate XT's positioning. The launch underscores Huawei's commitment to innovation in the foldable smartphone market, setting new standards for performance, privacy, and user experience.
