Norway-based Hagland Shipping has expanded its fleet with a wind-assisted combi freighter secured under a time charter agreement, the company announced in a press release.
The vessel is being chartered from Germany-based Reederei Gerdes and its commercial arm, over-C.
The 3,850 DWT freighter is equipped with Econowind's VentoFoils for wind-assisted propulsion. VentoFoils are non-rotating sail units that harness wind power to generate forward thrust, reducing reliance on conventional fuel.
In addition to wind assistance, the vessel features a battery-hybrid propulsion system capable of operating in fully electric mode for periods of time. It is also fitted with shore power connectivity, allowing the ship to draw electricity from onshore sources while in port, and an optimised hull design intended to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
The vessel is set to be deployed in the European short-sea dry bulk market. Combi freighters of this size class typically carry both dry bulk cargoes and general cargo, giving operators flexibility across different commodity flows.
