Google Launches Pics, an AI Image Tool for Workspace Users

Google has introduced a creative design and editing tool for business customers.

Google Pics, unveiled on Tuesday, is available to Workspace users and is based on the Nano Banana AI image-generating and editing model. It is offered as a standalone product and will also be integrated into existing apps including Slides, Docs and Drive, allowing users to edit images in the tools where they already work.

The launch adds another AI feature to Google’s productivity suite as companies continue to look for ways to produce visual assets without moving between multiple design tools. Google said the goal is to bring image generation and editing into the same environment teams already use for documents, presentations and file storage.

“While AI image generation has been a huge hit for personal use, it’s been a different story for businesses,” Meg Whittenberger, group product manager, said in a blog post. “Teams have struggled to create professional-grade images for marketing campaigns, customer presentations, and product storytelling, facing inconsistent results, endless trial-and-error prompting, and cumbersome workflows across multiple apps.”

Users can access the tool by visiting pics.new in their browser and either importing an image or generating one from a prompt. Pics then produces the image and also offers alternatives.

Google said the product includes a suite of “precision editing tools” that “eliminates the frustration of wrangling pixels and feeling like you need to be a professional designer to deliver a great image,” according to the vendor.

Existing design products such as Canva and Adobe Express are already available, but Google said Pics differs because it relies more heavily on AI to generate imagery.

Its capabilities include editing individual elements of an image, reformatting and translating text, cropping for social, web, print and digital use, upscaling to 2K and 4K, and reverting unwanted changes. Google also said the tool’s integration into familiar Workspace apps creates collaboration opportunities, since teams can work on assets alongside the rest of their day-to-day content.

Google said Pics is particularly well suited for creating and translating assets for global campaigns, brainstorming designs for events or merchandise, and creating business cards and flyers.

The company said Google Pics is available immediately to users on Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus plans, as well as to users with Google AI Pro and Ultra personal plans. It is also included in the Google AI Pro for Education plan.

Docs and Slides integration is available now, with Drive to follow in the next few weeks, Google said.
