As Nigerian students return to universities for a new academic year, Google has introduced an offer designed to make its paid AI tools more accessible. Students aged 18 and older who are enrolled at accredited universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education in Nigeria can now claim 12 months of Google AI Plus free of charge — a subscription valued at ₦92,400, equivalent to about ₦7,700 a month. The offer, part of the Gemini Student Offer, becomes available starting September 2026 and is also being extended to 27 other countries across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Students who took advantage of the offer last year can renew it for another year by confirming their student status. The subscription bundles a range of study-oriented AI tools intended to support coursework, research, and revision.

Google is not alone in courting students: rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic have also rolled out student discounts and campus-focused editions of their chatbots, borrowing a playbook long used by software and streaming companies to build habits among young users before they enter the workforce. For Google, Nigeria — Africa's most populous country, with one of the continent's largest tertiary student populations — has repeatedly featured in its digital-skills programmes, making the country a natural anchor for the regional rollout.

What the subscription includes

The package provides access to Deep Research, which assists with longer research projects, and Gemini Live, which enables real-time voice conversations with the AI. Subscribers also receive custom practice quizzes, unlimited file uploads, and 400GB of cloud storage.

Gemini Study Notebooks can turn uploaded lecture notes into quizzes and lesson plans. Students can use Google Lens to photograph equations or diagrams and receive step-by-step help, while interactive 3D visualisations support subjects that depend on understanding structures and diagrams.

For students working on final-year projects, Google's Deep Research tool can help find and organise information — though students will still need to check their sources and complete their academic work themselves.

Guided Learning

Google's announcement centres on a new feature called Guided Learning, which aims to make its AI, Gemini, act more like a tutor than a provider of quick answers. Instead of giving immediate solutions, Gemini asks questions and offers hints that help students think through problems. The feature arrives as schools and educators continue to discuss the role of AI in education. That debate predates Gemini: since ChatGPT's public release in late 2022, schools worldwide have weighed restrictions against integration, and in 2023 UNESCO published guidance urging governments and schools to set clear policies on generative AI use in classrooms.

A study conducted in West Africa with 1,763 students found that those using Guided Learning experienced significant learning growth, equivalent to 1.2 to 1.7 years of progress in just eight weeks. More than 90% of their interactions with Gemini were about understanding concepts, with direct answers provided only 2% of the time. Google says this indicates that AI can serve as a learning companion rather than a shortcut for completing tasks.

Educators can manage how students interact with Gemini through Google Classroom by locking it in Guided Learning mode, ensuring students focus on learning rather than obtaining quick answers. Google also maintains that student data is not used to train its AI models — a key reassurance, given that data handling has been among the most scrutinised issues as AI tools have entered schools.

New study features on YouTube

In addition, Google is introducing study-focused features on YouTube, such as reminders to take breaks and limits on distracting content — an acknowledgment that a large number of teenagers use online videos for their studies.

For students, particularly in Nigeria, access to tools like Gemini can enhance the learning experience by explaining difficult topics, generating practice questions, helping with research projects, and engaging in discussions. The stated goal is to help students become comfortable using AI for research and problem-solving.

How to claim the free subscription

Eligible students can claim the free 12-month Google AI Plus subscription by following these steps:

Step 1: Check your eligibility. Ensure you are currently enrolled at an accredited Nigerian university, polytechnic, or college of education, and that you are at least 18 years old. Have your proof of current enrollment ready, as it may be needed during the verification process.

Step 2: Start the verification process. Visit the Gemini student offer page or the Google One AI student offer page, and select the student offer you want to claim.

Step 3: Verify with SheerID. The offer page will guide you through the verification process, which is handled by SheerID, a third-party service widely used by brands to confirm student status for discounts. Fill out any required fields with your personal details and upload proof of your current enrollment if asked.

Step 4: Await confirmation. After submitting your details, you may need to wait for SheerID to verify your information. You will receive a confirmation once your status has been verified, allowing you to access the subscription.

Step 5: Access Google AI Plus. After verification, follow the instructions provided to set up your Google account if you don't already have one, then start using Google AI Plus and explore the AI tools available to you.

Students who claimed the offer in the previous academic year can re-verify their enrollment status to renew the subscription for another year. Google describes the initiative as an opportunity for eligible students to gain easy access to valuable tools that help enhance both academic and practical skills.
