Conservative lawyer George Conway, a longtime adversary of President Donald Trump, denounced the president as "at once both psychopathic and psychotic" — among many other things — in response to recent remarks in which Trump suggested it would be a fair price to pay if Iran destroyed Democratically led American cities.
The remarks came during a political rally this week, as Trump tried to persuade voters in Nebraska that the soaring costs resulting from his war with Iran had been worth it. As he made his pitch, he jokingly suggested that he would be fine with it if Iran attacked and wiped out Los Angeles and San Diego — two major West Coast cities led by Democrats and the largest in California — calling it a fair price to pay.
"It's a small price to pay for keeping the world safe, keeping our country safe," Trump said. "They can take out a city. Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego. This is a very small price to pay, and it's going to be over very soon. It's essentially over with, and they might keep going a little long. You know, they always say they have a big threshold for pain. They need it."
Alarm and condemnation of the remarks were swift, crossing party lines, with California Gov. Gavin Newsom calling the comments "deranged and dangerous" and "not normal."
In a post on X reacting to the remarks, Conway — an outspoken conservative critic of the president, the ex-husband of former Trump White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, and a co-founder of The Lincoln Project, the political group formed by anti-Trump Republicans ahead of the 2020 election — pulled few punches.
"You can reasonably dispute the meaning of a lot Trump says because he's so incoherent and inarticulate," Conway wrote. "But what you can't reasonably dispute is that he is a sadistic and delusional narcissistic sociopath, at once both psychopathic and psychotic, who is lacking in morality, conscience, empathy, remorse, and impulse control, and whose only concern if a city (in any country, including ours) were to be wiped off the face of the Earth, would be how it affects him."
MS NOW host Joe Scarborough, a former Republican congressman, was similarly appalled by the remarks during a Tuesday broadcast, saying it made no difference whether Trump was joking.
"There will be some, 'Oh, he's just joking. He's just.' Well, okay. Well, great," he said. "What other American presidents in our history, post-Civil War, have called for the destruction of entire cities? Joking? If this is your joke, this is your idea of a presidential joke, joking about the killing of 10 million or so people. Is that where we are? Because I thought it was bad enough when he was joking in front of Republicans several years ago, I think it was in [20]22, about an elderly man getting the hell beaten out of him and almost dying. Paul Pelosi, remember, [Trump] led those [laughing in] California."
Scarborough's reference was to the October 2022 break-in at the San Francisco home of Paul Pelosi, the husband of then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in which an intruder attacked him with a hammer.
