Genesis, the luxury marque of South Korean auto conglomerate Hyundai Motor Group that was launched as a standalone brand in 2015, says it engineered its new GV90 electric SUV from the ground up, reworking everything from the platform and battery architecture to the body structure and the assembly plant that will build it.

At a technical briefing in San Francisco on Thursday, Hyundai Motor Group executives presented the flagship SUV as the product of a broader rethink of how the Genesis brand approaches luxury electric vehicles. The GV90 will sit above the GV80 at the top of the brand's lineup and enters a full-size luxury EV field that includes models such as the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV and BMW iX.

Manfred Harrer, president and head of Hyundai Motor Group's R&D division, described the GV90 project as a redefinition of luxury mobility rather than a conventional model launch. Genesis Development Executive Director Heo Kwang-hoon called it the most challenging vehicle the brand has developed, saying the "zero-based" approach enabled Genesis to create its most advanced model to date.
