Young people entering the workforce today face a stark dichotomy: unprecedented opportunity or a daunting landscape. Entry-level corporate positions are disappearing—whether due to artificial intelligence or the widespread shift to remote work—severing traditional career-launching pathways. Simultaneously, demand for skilled trades workers is surging as a race to build AI infrastructure intensifies, with data center construction driving need for electricians, HVAC technicians, pipefitters, and other roles that cannot be performed remotely or automated by software.

Several compounding demographic forces further complicate the outlook. Baby boomers are retiring in large numbers, vacating positions across industries, while decades of declining birth rates have produced a shrinking pool of young workers. Lightcast, a labor market analytics firm, predicted in 2024 that U.S. employers will confront "the largest labor shortage the country has ever seen" as a result of this demographic drought.

Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce estimated last year that the U.S. economy will require an additional 5.25 million workers with education or training beyond high school. The center warned that 171 occupations will experience skills shortages through 2032 absent a massive expansion of educational attainment.

At the same time, the rapid proliferation of AI tools is lowering the barrier to entrepreneurship, making it feasible to launch and operate a business with minimal staff—or even as a single-person "solopreneur." The implications extend beyond the tech sector: small businesses account for roughly two-thirds of net new U.S. job creation historically, meaning that if AI-accelerated formation sustains, it could partially offset the displacement of traditional entry-level roles.

The question for Gen Z is how to position themselves in this rapidly evolving landscape.

The Case for Specialized Talent

Economist and market veteran Ed Yardeni highlighted a recent surge in job openings within professional and business services, interpreting it as evidence of the demand for specialized talent driven by AI adoption.

In a June research note, Yardeni observed that companies with one to nine employees posted the most openings, reflecting accelerated business formation enabled by AI tools that reduce the cost and complexity of entrepreneurship. However, despite the increase in posted positions, actual hiring remained subdued—a disconnect that mirrors broader Bureau of Labor Statistics data showing U.S. job openings have outpaced hires for much of the post-pandemic period.

"That could be because the job openings AI creates are highly specialized, so talent is in short supply," Yardeni explained. He added that this dynamic may also be contributing to elevated long-term unemployment.

Yardeni pointed to a notable rise in technology job postings requiring explicit AI fluency. In June, that share reached 75%, up from 67% in March and representing a 178% increase year over year. According to the tech workplace platform Dice, some of the fastest-growing skill areas include agentic AI, responsible AI, and AI infrastructure.

"AI is creating a structural skills mismatch as companies aggressively replace generalists with specialized talent," Yardeni said. "We believe in the Jevons Paradox: As AI makes tasks more efficient, the falling cost of using that capability ultimately drives up total demand for it, making AI a net creator of jobs over time."

The Case for 'General-Purpose Nerds'

Nobel laureate and MIT professor Simon Johnson offers a contrasting perspective. In a June interview with the Financial Times, he illustrated the career crossroads using his own two daughters as examples.

One daughter is drawn to laboratory science—the type of high-value work that demands human judgment and is unlikely to be displaced by AI. His other daughter is more of a generalist. Johnson argued that the emergence of a new general-purpose technology—namely, AI—calls for what he termed "general-purpose nerds." The phrase "general-purpose technology" is itself an established concept in economics, used to describe innovations like electricity, the steam engine, and the internet that transform economies across virtually every sector rather than serving a single industry.

"The general-purpose nerd is someone who can master the latest AI over the weekend. On Monday and Tuesday, they can interview real people face to face and learn things. On Wednesday, they can read a 50-year-old book that has not yet been digitised, make sense of it and figure out how you're going to use it. On Thursday, they can run a podcast. On a Friday, they prepare a one-page memo for the minister," Johnson explained.

By contrast, a research assistant whose sole function is looking up stock market data from Brazil, for instance, could easily be replaced by AI. However, an assistant capable of integrating information, solving problems, and delivering solutions to leaders more quickly would be "quite appealing," Johnson said.

For executives who feel overwhelmed by AI, Johnson's recommendation is to hire a general-purpose nerd—someone who is also a generalist beyond the academic sphere.

"I think young people getting life experiences, learning languages, traveling, understanding other people, being able to talk to people and listen face to face, and then combining these things, are going to be very valuable," Johnson argued. "I think if you want to place your bets on something specialized, you need to think about where AI is going to come into that."
