Fitzroy Minerals Extends Shallow Copper Mineralization at Buen Retiro Project in Chile

Author: The Northern Miner·

Key Takeaways

  • Fitzroy Minerals' latest drilling at Buen Retiro confirmed wide zones of shallow copper mineralization, with hole BRT-DDH072 intersecting 111.9 metres grading 0.97% copper from 21.1 metres depth.
  • The company aims to complete the drill-out of the 1.7-km-long Tenorita trend in August, with an additional 9,000 metres of drilling planned this year to support an initial resource estimate and prefeasibility study due by mid-next year.
  • Fitzroy is evaluating a heap-leach processing route and signed a letter of intent with Chilean miner Pucobre for potential joint development, with an expected partnership structure of 70% Fitzroy and 30% Pucobre.
  • The Buen Retiro project covers 132 sq. km in Chile's Atacama Region and hosts the past-producing Manto Negro mine, which yielded 34.4 million lb. of copper between 2005 and 2009.
  • Shares in Fitzroy Minerals rose 5.3% to 40¢ in Toronto following the announcement, giving the company a market value of approximately $130 million.

Fitzroy Minerals (TSXV: FTZ; US-OTC: FTZFF) has extended broad, shallow copper mineralization along the Tenorita trend at its Buen Retiro project in Chile, advancing toward an initial resource estimate and prefeasibility study with production targeted for 2028. The results come as copper demand projections tied to electrification, grid expansion, and renewable energy infrastructure continue to draw exploration capital to Chile, the world's largest copper-producing country.

Among the highlights from the latest assays, hole BRT-DDH072 intersected 111.9 metres grading 0.97% copper from 21.1 metres depth, including a higher-grade interval of 18 metres at 1.59% copper from 84 metres, the company reported on Thursday. Hole BRT-DDH070 returned 147.7 metres grading 0.41% copper from 26.3 metres, including 47 metres at 0.88% copper from 113 metres.

"Buen Retiro continues to deliver excellent results and several of the fifteen drill holes reported today reflect wide zones of mineralization in leachable material close to surface," President and CEO Merlin Marr-Johnson said in the release. "Note that the best drill hole reported today, drill hole 72, is to the east of drill hole 70, confirming consistent shallow mineralization for about 300 metres across the widest part of the Tenorita area."

The latest results build on a series of strong assays this year as Fitzroy progresses toward its first resource and economic study at the brownfield project. The company is evaluating a heap-leach operation that could feed nearby solvent extraction-electrowinning facilities, a processing route widely used in Chile for oxide and transitional copper deposits and generally associated with lower capital intensity than concentrator-based operations. In April, Fitzroy signed a letter of intent with listed Chilean miner Pucobre outlining a potential joint development pathway that includes access to an existing processing plant approximately 90 km away.

Drilling and Resource Objectives

Fitzroy currently has four drill rigs operating at Buen Retiro and aims to complete the drill-out of the 1.7-km-long Tenorita trend in August. The company plans an additional 9,000 metres of drilling this year to upgrade the Tenorita zone to measured, indicated, and inferred resources for the prefeasibility study, define inferred resources elsewhere on the property, and test new exploration targets. Since the start of February, Fitzroy has completed 78 diamond drill holes totaling 13,036 metres.

The prefeasibility study is due by mid-next year under an earn-in agreement with the current equal owners, Pucobre and private mining partnership Sociedad Contractual Minera Buen Retiro. The likely eventual partnership structure would be 70% Fitzroy and 30% Pucobre, the parties have stated.

Project Location and Historical Context

The Buen Retiro project is located approximately 1,000 km north of Santiago and 60 km south of Copiapó in Chile's Atacama Region, a jurisdiction that hosts some of the country's most productive copper operations. It covers 132 sq. km within the Punta del Cobre iron oxide copper-gold belt and hosts the past-producing Manto Negro mine, which produced 34.4 million lb. copper between 2005 and 2009 under Pucobre.

The project is situated near Lundin Mining's (TSX: LUN) Candelaria mine, which produced 145,000 tonnes of copper last year. Earlier assays in March included 384 metres grading 0.23% copper from four metres in hole BRT-DDH045, confirming a large Candelaria-style mineralized system. June results returned 59 metres grading 1.73% copper, including 12 metres at 5.39% copper, further strengthening the near-surface resource target.

Market Response
