China’s Guangzhou Port has completed its first ship-to-ship (STS) green methanol bunkering operation for an international bulk carrier, according to the port authority.
The operation was carried out at the Lantau Island anchorage by the bunkering vessel Daqing 268, which is operated by China Shipping & Sinopec Suppliers. The port authority disclosed the operation in an announcement on Tuesday.
Daqing 268 supplied 1,021 metric tonnes (mt) of ISCC EU-certified green methanol to Green Future, a methanol dual-fuel Ultramax bulk carrier. The vessel was delivered to Japanese shipping company NYK last year.
The operation marks the first green methanol STS bunkering for an international bulk carrier at a domestic Chinese port. Green methanol bunkering activity in China has so far focused mainly on container ships and roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) vessels, making the operation a new application of the country’s methanol bunkering infrastructure for the bulk shipping segment.
