Members of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka (FHLBank Topeka) can now use VantageScore 4.0 credit scores when pledging mortgage collateral, effective immediately. The change allows the 637 member banks and institutions of FHLBank Topeka to apply the VantageScore 4.0 model to score an additional 1.9 million consumers across the bank's district.
FHLBank Topeka is one of 11 regional banks in the government-sponsored Federal Home Loan Bank System, which supplies liquidity to member lenders across the United States. Members pledge loans as collateral to draw on that funding, so the credit scores a regional bank accepts for pledged mortgages shape which loans its member lenders can use to secure it.
"The modernization of mortgage underwriting is here. VantageScore 4.0 adoption is already improving access to housing finance for creditworthy consumers," said Anthony Hutchinson, EVP and Head of Public Affairs at VantageScore. "The Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka's decision to accept VantageScore 4.0 for mortgage collateral will offer lenders industry-leading, cost-effective innovation to expand homeownership possibilities in the heart of our country."
With the decision, FHLBank Topeka joins a group of government-sponsored mortgage entities that now accept VantageScore 4.0 for mortgages. Those entities include Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Federal Housing Administration, along with the Federal Home Loan Banks of Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas, Des Moines, New York, and San Francisco. That places seven of the System's 11 regional banks on the acceptance list, with the remaining four not named in the announcement.
The move follows broader adoption across the housing finance system. In April 2026, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), which regulates the Federal Home Loan Bank System and government-sponsored enterprises, announced that adoption of VantageScore 4.0 had begun for mortgage loans originated under Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Topeka's decision carries that adoption into the System's collateral channel, giving lenders in its district a funding-side route for mortgages scored under the model.
According to VantageScore's estimates, use of the VantageScore 4.0 model will give approximately 33 million more consumers nationwide access to a credit score that may help them obtain a mortgage. That total includes an estimated 1.9 million consumers within the FHLBank Topeka footprint, which comprises Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. Uptake among the district's 637 member institutions, visible in the mortgages they pledge as collateral going forward, will be the next measure of the decision's reach.
