FalconX and Ethena Launch $1 Billion Institutional Lending Facility Backed by USDe Assets

FalconX and Ethena have launched a $1 billion secured lending facility that will use the assets backing USDe to fund overcollateralized loans to institutional borrowers.

The facility is structured through a special purpose vehicle (SPV), a structure commonly used in institutional finance to ring-fence assets and liabilities, with FalconX originating and servicing the loans and managing the collateral. Assets securing the loans will be held at qualified custodians. The emphasis on ring-fenced structures and third-party custody echoes lessons from the 2022 crypto credit crisis, when the failures of lenders such as Celsius, BlockFi and Voyager froze customer withdrawals and sharply contracted crypto lending markets. For Ethena, the arrangement opens institutional lending as an additional source of returns on the assets backing USDe, beyond the crypto basis strategies the protocol has traditionally used.

FalconX said the facility can support financing for institutional trading strategies, corporate treasury management and payments. The companies did not disclose the facility's expected returns, loan terms, borrowers, or how much capital has initially been deployed.

The agreement expands an existing relationship between the two firms, with FalconX already supporting USDe across its institutional trading and financing services. FalconX is a digital-asset prime brokerage serving institutional clients, while Ethena Labs is the developer of USDe, a dollar-pegged synthetic asset launched in early 2024 that grew into one of the largest stablecoins by market capitalization within its first year.

USDe has a market capitalization of about $4 billion, according to DefiLlama data. Unlike fiat-backed stablecoins such as USDT and USDC, whose issuers hold reserves in cash and short-term U.S. Treasury instruments, USDe was designed to maintain its dollar peg using crypto collateral paired with short derivatives positions, with returns generated in part through funding rates and basis spreads. Those funding rates move with leverage demand in derivatives markets and have varied widely over time.

The new facility gives Ethena a route into institutional credit as an additional yield source for the assets backing its synthetic dollar. The deal also lands amid a broader institutional turn in crypto lending, where on-chain private-credit platforms such as Maple Finance have built loan books serving professional borrowers and prime brokerages have expanded financing services as they compete for institutional clients.
