Evoca Group has released its Carbon Footprint Calculator globally, aiming to help roasters and coffee chains choose equipment that aligns with their ESG goals.
Achieving net-zero emissions across the coffee industry remains difficult. Coffee is grown in many rural and isolated regions, and the value chain includes a large number of operators, making emissions difficult to measure. Calculating Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions adds another layer of complexity, particularly when businesses are purchasing equipment and machinery. Manufacturing, transport, installation and eventual use all require energy. Without reliable product-level data, companies can struggle to identify where emissions are generated or where action should begin.
Against that backdrop, product-level tools are becoming increasingly important for operators trying to compare equipment on more than just performance or price. For professional coffee equipment, where machines can run for many years, the energy used during operation can be just as relevant as the emissions tied to manufacturing and logistics.
Evoca Group, a multinational producer of professional coffee and vending machines whose brands include Gaggia Milano, Saeco and Necta, says it is addressing these challenges step by step through a new tool called the Evoca CFP Calculator. The company says the calculator is designed to help businesses better understand the climate impact of their equipment choices.
“From the beginning, Evoca’s sustainability journey has been strongly product oriented. We knew that if we wanted to make sustainability truly relevant for our business and our customers, we had to start from the environmental performance of our machines,” says Evoca Group Chief Sustainability Officer Giusi Bonini.
“The first version of the calculator was created as an internal tool to help us understand where the main emissions and contributions were generated across the lifecycle of our products and how to give direction to our product sustainability initiatives.
“The new version builds on that experience: it is more mature, more robust, and designed to make product carbon footprint information easier to use, interpret, compare and share with customers and partners.”
The calculator uses a methodology that has been third-party certified in accordance with ISO 14067:2018, the international standard for quantifying and reporting the carbon footprint of a product.
Users select the brand, product and model, then enter the machine’s estimated lifespan, operating time and estimated cups produced per day. The tool then calculates carbon footprint per cup and energy consumption per cup, as well as the percentage contribution of each phase to the total carbon footprint.
Bonini says the calculator estimates the product carbon footprint by examining the full lifecycle of a machine, including raw materials and components, manufacturing processes, logistics, the use phase and end-of-life management.
“The calculator helps customers include environmental performance in their purchasing decisions, alongside quality, reliability, technical performance and total cost of ownership,” she says.
“For operators, roasters and distributors, this means being able to choose equipment that is not only efficient and high-performing but also aligned with their ESG goals and with the growing sustainability expectations of their own customers.”

Bonini says one of the main challenges in moving the calculator from an internal tool to an external product was obtaining reliable data across the full lifecycle, including materials, production, transport, use phase and end of life.
“For professional coffee equipment, the use phase is especially important, because machines operate for many years and energy consumption can vary depending on usage patterns. The model must be robust, but also practical enough to support real business decisions,” she says.
“To address this variability, Evoca has made its carbon footprint calculator available as an online tool, allowing customers to input their own usage data and obtain results that are more representative of their operating conditions. The calculator uses technical product data such as material composition, energy performance data, usage assumptions, logistics parameters, and end-of-life scenarios.
“Each input contributes to the overall carbon footprint, based on product data and modelled assumptions, with emissions calculated using established emission factors,” Bonini says. “The output helps identify where the most significant emissions are generated and where improvement opportunities exist.”
The Carbon Footprint Calculator is the latest addition to Evoca Group’s sustainability commitments, but it is not the company’s first initiative in this area.
Evoca says its approach is supported by internationally recognised frameworks and certifications, including science-based emission reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). In 2024, the Group also received an EcoVadis Platinum rating, placing it among the top 1 per cent of companies globally and recognising its integrated and systematic approach to sustainability and governance.
Against that backdrop, the Carbon Footprint Calculator is presented as a natural extension of Evoca’s ESG roadmap. The company says it adds another practical tool for customers and partners, providing accurate and verifiable data while reinforcing its long-term commitment to measurable and credible sustainability outcomes.
“The calculator brings together product innovation, climate action and circular economy. The key principle is simple: if you cannot measure it, it is very difficult to manage it, and even harder to improve it,” Bonini says.
“It supports our work on emissions reduction, energy efficiency, responsible manufacturing, and material choices. It is not only a reporting tool; it also helps guide product design and development decisions, making sustainability more concrete and embedded in the way we innovate.”
Evoca says the launch comes at a time when sustainability is no longer viewed as a “nice to have.” Customers across the value chain are increasingly requesting verifiable data on emissions, energy efficiency, materials and supply chain practices. The issue is especially relevant for professional coffee equipment, where product lifetime, reliability and energy performance directly affect operating costs and environmental impact.
