Ediya Coffee, one of South Korea's largest coffee franchise chains, has opened its first outlet in Laos as the company continues to broaden its presence across Southeast Asia, a region where coffee consumption has been rising steadily alongside urbanization and the expansion of middle-class households.
Customers lined up to place orders at the new branch in Vientiane, the Laotian capital, on Saturday, according to images released by the company.
The expansion follows a master franchise agreement Ediya signed last year with Grandview Property Sole, a subsidiary of the Laotian private conglomerate Kolao Group. The deal was announced in a company press release.
Under a master franchise arrangement, the master franchisee is granted the right not only to open its own franchise locations within a designated territory but also to sub-franchise units to third-party operators. This model has been widely used by international food and beverage brands entering emerging Southeast Asian markets, as it allows faster rollout by leveraging a local partner's knowledge of regulations, real estate, and consumer preferences.
Ediya and Grandview Property plan to extend their cooperation beyond Laos, with intentions to open Ediya stores in Cambodia and Myanmar as well. Grandview Property already maintains business operations in those countries through its activities in the distribution and construction sectors.
Laos becomes the fourth international market for Ediya's coffee chain business. The company first ventured overseas with an outlet in Guam in 2023, followed by a second expansion into Malaysia in 2024 and a third into Canada earlier this year.
Founded in 2001, Ediya is a homegrown Korean coffee franchise known for offering coffee at relatively affordable prices compared with some competitors. As of the end of 2024, the chain operated 2,581 stores across South Korea, Asia's fourth-largest economy by GDP.
The Korean coffee market is among the most competitive in the region, and domestic chains have increasingly looked abroad for growth opportunities in recent years. Ediya's push into Southeast Asia comes as several Korean food and beverage brands have pursued similar overseas strategies, seeking to offset intensifying domestic competition and a maturing home market by tapping consumer demand in neighboring Asian economies.
