The Depository Trust Company (DTC), a subsidiary of The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), has launched a tokenization service that allows eligible users to mint tokenized versions of the securities held in its custody. The company announced the launch on Wednesday, and twenty clients — including JPMorgan, Citi, Fidelity Investments and Citadel Securities — have already signed agreements to use it.

Service Goes Live With 34 Supported Securities

DTCC's website shows that its Tokenization Service is now live, initially supporting 34 securities, including selected large-cap Russell 1000 constituents, ETFs and U.S. Treasuries. The Russell 1000 tracks the large-cap segment of the U.S. equity market, anchoring the initial lineup in established large U.S. companies alongside ETFs and government debt.

The DTCC Tokenization Service (DTS) lets eligible users mint tokenized versions of securities held at DTC, and it is available to DTCC clients. Tokenization refers to the practice of issuing blockchain-based tokens that represent traditional financial assets such as stocks, ETFs and bonds. DTS converts between traditional and tokenized forms of securities, and the resulting tokens can be transferred to digital wallets while retaining the same ownership rights and investor protections as their traditional counterparts.

DTCC said the process could improve access to liquidity and enable firms to move collateral within minutes.

SEC Clearance and Pilot Testing

In December 2025, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission issued a “no action” letter stating it would not recommend enforcement action against DTC over its proposed tokenization program. The framework covers eligible Russell 1000 stocks, major index ETFs and U.S. Treasury securities, and tokenized versions keep the rights and benefits of the traditional securities.

In May, DTCC said it planned a full launch of tokenized securities trading in October 2026. A pilot came first: in July, DTCC completed limited-production transactions with more than 30 financial firms, using tokenized assets in live trades.

Firms and Networks Behind the Service

DTCC said 20 clients have signed agreements to use the service, including Alpaca, Citadel Securities, Citi, Clear Street, DriveWealth, Fidelity Investments, Interchange Clearing and JPMorgan. CoinGape reported that Morgan Stanley, Bank of America and Barclays are also joining, and DTCC expects more participants as the service grows. The early group spans banks, asset managers, market makers and brokerage-service providers, covering several distinct roles in the securities trading chain.

DTC holds more than $114 trillion in assets under custody, spanning stocks and exchange-traded funds. According to DTCC, the service creates a “practical path” for tokenized securities adoption.

DTCC President and CEO Frank La Salla said the firm is laying the groundwork for “responsible institutional adoption at scale.” Brian Steele, president of Clearing & Securities Services, said the industry is ready to move from experimentation to practical use.

The service currently runs on the Canton Network and DTCC's private Besu network, with additional blockchain networks planned for 2027. Besu is open-source blockchain software compatible with Ethereum, giving the private network a foundation in widely used technology. DTCC is working with digital asset firms including BitGo, Fireblocks, Blockdaemon, Broadridge and Ondo, and the platform was developed with more than 150 financial institutions.

Separately, Ondo Finance said it joined DTCC's Fund/SERV network, a move that lets its tokenized fund operations connect with existing U.S. investment distribution channels.
