The national average price for diesel climbed to a record $5.85 as of Sept. 4, surpassing the previous high of $5.8159 set in June 2022, according to AAA.
The AAA national average for diesel rose from $5.7832 on Thursday to $5.85 on Friday. The month-ago average stood at $5.3715, while the year-ago average was significantly lower at $3.7121.
Diesel is the primary fuel for the U.S. trucking industry, which hauls the bulk of the nation's freight, so diesel costs are closely watched as an input price across shipping, agriculture, and construction sectors. The previous record set in June 2022 came during the energy price surge that followed Russia's invasion of Ukraine earlier that year.
"Diesel prices have skyrocketed since Trump started his war with Iran," Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona declared in a Thursday post on X.
"Diesel fuels our supply chains and powers our farms and food production. Even if you don't use diesel, those higher costs get passed on to you, making the food on your table more expensive," he added.

Americans have faced higher fuel prices over the past six months amid the ongoing conflict with Iran. President Donald Trump has announced what he called the "biggest oil deal in world history," saying it would substantially lower gas prices. Venezuela has said the deal targets 1.5 million barrels per day and could generate $200 billion.
As of Friday, the AAA national average price for regular gasoline was $4.1474, compared with the year-ago average of $3.2016. The highest recorded AAA national average price for regular gasoline was set in June 2022, when Americans paid $5.0165 per gallon.
