Deutsche Bank to Launch Regulated Crypto Custody Service for Institutional Clients

Deutsche Bank is preparing to launch a regulated digital asset custody service for institutional and corporate clients in Europe, with its first customers expected to go live this year once the applicable regulatory process is complete, according to an official announcement from the bank.

The offering will initially support Bitcoin, Ether and selected stablecoins, including USDC, EURC and EURAU. Deutsche Bank also plans to add tokenized financial instruments as the product develops. Clients will be able to hold and transfer digital assets through the bank, with Deutsche Bank managing wallets and private keys on their behalf.

The initial client base is expected to include corporations, asset managers, hedge funds, custodians, brokers and sovereign institutions across the bank's Corporate Bank and Investment Bank divisions. For many of these institutions, regulated custody is a gating requirement rather than a convenience, as internal mandates and risk policies commonly restrict digital asset holdings to licensed, supervised providers.

Security Architecture Built Around Institutional Controls

The custody platform incorporates hardware-protected key generation, separate warm and cold storage environments, segregation of duties, multi-person transaction approvals and controlled backup and recovery systems. Deutsche Bank will also rely on external technology and infrastructure providers for parts of the platform.

The bank has worked with Swiss digital asset infrastructure firm Taurus since 2023 under a global custody and tokenization partnership covering cryptocurrencies, tokenized assets and digital currencies. Its custody plans expanded further in 2025, when the bank targeted a 2026 rollout involving Bitpanda Technology Solutions alongside Taurus. Deutsche Bank and Bitpanda already maintained a banking relationship covering real-time payments and German IBAN infrastructure for Bitpanda.

Gerald Podobnik, co-head of Deutsche Bank's Corporate Bank, said the bank sees digital assets as additional financial rails that can operate alongside existing market infrastructure. The service will expand based on client demand, regulation and the bank's internal product and risk approvals.

European Banks Expand Direct Crypto Services

Deutsche Bank joins a growing group of European banks moving crypto services into regulated banking operations, a shift that lets institutions hold digital assets within an established banking relationship instead of relying solely on specialized crypto-native providers. Italy's Banca Sella completed the regulatory process needed to offer MiCA-cleared crypto custody earlier this year, covering both custody and transfers of digital assets. Separately, Standard Chartered is moving to acquire Zodia Custody's regulated custody business and integrate those operations more closely with its institutional banking platform.

MiCA created a common EU framework for crypto-asset services, including custody, replacing much of the previous country-by-country licensing structure. Once authorized, providers can passport their services across EU member states on the basis of a single approval. Deutsche Bank said last week that almost 200 European crypto-asset service providers were already authorized to provide custody and administration services under the developing European framework.

Custody Extends Deutsche Bank's Digital Asset Buildout

The custody launch follows several other blockchain initiatives inside Deutsche Bank. The bank completed its first euro-denominated cross-border payment through Partior's blockchain network in September 2025 and has continued work on tokenized money, securities and settlement infrastructure. Deutsche Bank is also among 21 financial institutions developing a global bank-backed stablecoin initiative targeting a U.S. dollar product in 2027, with versions in other G7 currencies planned afterward.

The custody service is expected to onboard its first institutional and corporate clients during 2026. Its final launch timing, available markets and supported assets remain tied to the completion of the applicable regulatory process.
