DeFiLlama Movers data shows August crypto winners losing momentum as yields rise

DeFiLlama’s Movers dashboard is showing a widening divergence across the cryptocurrency market. Several tokens that led August’s advance remain well ahead of their peers over the past 30 days, but some have begun to lose ground over the latest seven-day period.

The weakness is notable because it is appearing among the market’s strongest momentum trades rather than across the broader large-capitalization cryptocurrency market. DeFiLlama’s token-ranking tool tracks the performance of the top 100, 200 or 300 assets over 24-hour, seven-day and 30-day periods. Comparing those windows helps distinguish sustained monthly outperformance from more recent changes in momentum.

The September 12 update shows that Zcash (ZEC), Uniswap (UNI), Hyperliquid (HYPE), XRP and Solana (SOL) have all outperformed Bitcoin over the past month. However, their shorter-term results have begun to separate.

Winners and laggards diverge

ZEC stands out as the only one of the group to post a positive performance over both periods under consideration. HYPE, UNI and XRP, despite their strong monthly gains, have turned negative over the past week. SOL recorded only a modest weekly gain, while Bitcoin also declined.

The divergence is particularly notable after the strong altcoin trend reported by Cryptopolitan at the beginning of September, when 83 of the top 100 alternative cryptocurrencies closed August with gains. The leading assets during that period included ZEC, HYPE, SOL and Pump.fun, as liquidity shifted toward established coins with active use cases.

The structure of Bitcoin’s August advance also provides context. According to DeFiLlama Research, daily spot volume increased 153% during the breakout, compared with a 109% increase for perpetuals. At the same time, Bitcoin open interest declined. The data indicated that new capital contributed more to the move than leverage alone.

The latest Movers data will provide an indication of how much of that demand can withstand an unfavorable interest-rate environment.

Why the rate backdrop matters

According to Binance Research, total cryptocurrency market capitalization rose 17.6% in August to $2.70 trillion. The firm said part of the increase was a response to changes in interest-rate expectations.

A hawkish speech by Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh at Jackson Hole on August 28 erased about 60% of the market’s September pricing adjustments in a single move, while the probability of interest-rate hikes shifted toward 60%.

The backdrop became more difficult afterward. A Reuters report published September 11 said the yield on the 10-year US Treasury note was close to 4.93% after the August consumer price index rose 0.4% month over month and 3.4% year over year. The inflation readings were in line with forecasts, while borrowing costs remained close to 5%, increasing concerns in risk markets.

James Butterfill, head of research at CoinShares, described Bitcoin’s recent behavior as follows:

“Bitcoin has traded increasingly like gold over the last couple of weeks as the debasement trade has returned to the fore.” — James Butterfill, CoinShares Head of Research

Butterfill said monetary policy remained the primary issue. Concerns about the sustainability of US government finances may support Bitcoin, but tighter monetary policy can reduce demand for risk assets. His comments were included in a CoinShares market update.

Profit-taking or the start of a reversal?

So far, the evidence points more toward a selective unwinding of momentum trades than a market-wide sell-off. Glassnode’s Week 37 report placed Bitcoin near $79,100 as futures open interest moved above its upper statistical band, capital inflows strengthened and 69.3% of coins remained in profit. Prices were relatively flat even as leverage and profit-taking increased.

Token supply events can also intensify weakness in smaller assets. Tokenomist found a median 14.7% decline relative to Bitcoin during the month before scheduled unlocks across its sample. The effect was concentrated in early-stage tokens with thin circulating supplies, while more established and liquid assets showed no significant unlock effect.

That distinction remains relevant to the current divergence. If weekly losses continue among August’s biggest winners while Bitcoin performs better, the move would be consistent with a rotation away from crowded trades. If Bitcoin weakens alongside those assets while yields remain elevated, the same momentum unwind could become a broader retreat from risk assets.
