U.S. crypto exchange-traded funds recorded $610.7 million in net outflows between Oct. 12 and Oct. 16, according to data from Farside Investors, with Ethereum products losing more money than their Bitcoin counterparts over the five trading sessions.
The weekly total spans five tracked ETF categories — products tied to Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Zcash and Hyperliquid — and is down from the $1.29 billion in net withdrawals recorded the prior week. Ethereum funds shed $320.1 million, while Bitcoin funds lost $228.4 million, meaning the two largest categories together accounted for approximately 89.8% of the combined outflow. Solana, Zcash and Hyperliquid products lost a combined $62.2 million, and every tracked category finished the week in negative territory.

Spot crypto ETFs have become one of the primary channels through which institutional investors gain exposure to digital assets. U.S. spot Bitcoin funds began trading in January 2024, followed by spot Ethereum products in July of the same year, with offerings from issuers including BlackRock, Fidelity and Grayscale. Because ETF shares are created and redeemed in response to investor demand, weekly flow tallies like Farside's are widely followed as a gauge of how institutional exposure to digital assets shifts from week to week.
Weekly Outflows Ease From Prior Week
Net withdrawals fell 52.5% from the $1.2863 billion recorded during the Oct. 5 to Oct. 9 period, marking a second straight week of net withdrawals. Bitcoin, Ethereum and Zcash funds all posted smaller losses than they had in the earlier week.
📊 LATEST: Spot Bitcoin ETFs saw -$82.4M are seeing a majority of outflows this week, with the 7-day total now -$936.3M. Zoom out though and the 30-day net is still +$2.27 BILLION. One rough week doesn't undo a month of buying. pic.twitter.com/hzZ3AZ0q8v

Tuesday was the only session of the week to record combined inflows, at $194.3 million, but that was not enough to offset losses across the other four sessions. Funds had lost $155.5 million on Monday. Wednesday brought the largest daily loss at $393.4 million, followed by another $90.1 million of withdrawals on Thursday and $166 million on Friday. The Friday figure capped a week in which redemptions outweighed inflows on four of five days.\nSeparately, CoinShares reported $434 million in withdrawals from global digital asset products in its own reporting week, linking the outflows to changing interest rate expectations after U.S. inflation and retail sales data. Farside's tables show fund flows without giving a cause for individual transactions.
Ethereum, Bitcoin and Altcoin Fund Details
Ethereum funds posted four negative days and one positive day. BlackRock's iShares Ethereum Trust lost $299 million, representing 93.4% of the category's net outflow and leaving the weekly figure dependent on flows through a single product. Fidelity's Ethereum fund took in $10.5 million, while Grayscale's Ethereum Trust lost $18.3 million and its lower-fee Mini Trust shed $12.4 million.
Bitcoin funds took in $175.7 million on Tuesday, but Wednesday's $261.4 million withdrawal was larger than that intake. Over the full week, BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust lost $165.4 million, and Fidelity's Bitcoin fund shed $60.2 million.
Solana products lost $25.5 million, with every session in the red. Zcash's tracked fund lost $19.2 million, and Hyperliquid products lost $17.5 million.
Charles Schwab analyst Adam Lynch said the Bitcoin and Ethereum outflows reflect tactical institutional trading. He named regulatory progress and Ethereum's upcoming Q4 network upgrade as possible catalysts. Both sit ahead on the calendar, and the next weekly tally from Farside will show whether the current run of withdrawals extends into a third week.
In a separate development, VanEck asked the SEC on Oct. 14 to withdraw its proposed Lido Staked Ethereum ETF registration. The product was designed to offer exposure to Lido Staked Ether (stETH), a liquid staking token. The filing said the firm does not intend to proceed with the planned distribution and that no shares had been sold. A withdrawal takes a proposed fund out of the SEC's review process, though it does not bar the firm from filing a new application for a similar product later.
