Credit unions now have a production-ready path to offer Bitcoin and other digital asset services without depending on external platforms, following an announcement from DaLand CUSO and Circuit, an 80-member credit union collaborative, that Circuit's Digital Asset Initiative has transitioned into implementation.

The move addresses a gap that has left many of the nation's roughly 4,600 credit unions — which collectively hold approximately $2 trillion in assets and serve over 130 million members — largely on the sidelines of digital asset services while large banks and fintech firms have moved ahead with cryptocurrency offerings.

The program provides participating institutions with access to DaLand's CODE Engine and Coin2Core technology, which integrates digital asset functionality directly into core banking platforms including Corelation KeyStone, Fiserv DNA, and Jack Henry Symyar. Under what DaLand terms a "Hybrid Custody" model, credit unions maintain full custody of assets, member relationships, and data, rather than directing customers to third-party cryptocurrency platforms. That approach contrasts with partnership models where members are routed to external crypto exchanges, a setup that has drawn regulatory scrutiny over consumer protection and operational transparency.

Three credit unions are already operating on the platform. St. Cloud Financial Credit Union has issued its own stablecoin, $CLDUSD. Canvas Credit Union, a $5 billion institution, became a DaLand owner following deployment. Blaze Credit Union has also invested as an owner. According to DaLand, its combined production footprint now spans credit unions representing more than $10 billion in total assets.

The announcement arrives as the passage of the GENIUS Act and other federal digital-asset legislation compels financial institutions to formalize their cryptocurrency strategies. The GENIUS Act, which establishes a federal regulatory framework for payment stablecoins, places new compliance expectations on depository institutions exploring digital asset services. Industry executives described the development as a transition from exploring digital assets to actively deploying them.

"We weren't looking for another concept to study," said Canvas CIO David Pierce, emphasizing that the credit union sought infrastructure it could own rather than rent.

Justin Burleson of Blaze Credit Union, a former NCUA official, stated that his institution wanted digital asset activity to remain visible to "examiners, boards, and members" rather than being handled by an outside vendor. The emphasis on regulatory transparency reflects ongoing attention from the NCUA, which has issued risk advisories to federally insured credit unions regarding digital asset activities.

Circuit, which over the past year developed educational programming focused on digital assets, indicated that Phase 2 represents a pivot toward hands-on evaluation.

"Innovation moves faster when credit unions share what they're learning," said Circuit's Chief Strategy Officer Ethan Cunningham.
