China's COSCO Shipping has taken delivery of a new multi-purpose vessel designed for future conversion to methanol propulsion.

The 80,000 DWT vessel, named Guo Liang Hai, has officially entered service, the company announced in a social media post. It is the sixth ship in its series and is designed primarily for grain transport.

"At nearly 230 metres in length, Guo Liang Hai is also equipped with a smart management system, low-carbon design features and a methanol-ready fuel interface, supporting future energy transition pathways," COSCO Shipping said.

The vessel has already been deployed on routes connecting South America and China, a corridor central to the global agricultural trade in soybeans and other bulk commodities.

The delivery reflects a broader industry trend, with several shipowners ordering methanol- or ammonia-ready vessels in recent years as they evaluate which alternative fuels are likely to achieve widespread adoption. This approach allows owners to operate vessels on conventional fuels initially while retaining the option to convert them to alternative-fuel propulsion at a later date. The strategy has gained traction as the International Maritime Organization pursues targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping, including a goal to peak emissions as soon as possible and reach net zero around or by 2050.

Methanol has attracted attention as a potential marine fuel because it can be produced from renewable feedstocks and produces lower emissions of sulfur oxides and particulate matter compared with conventional heavy fuel oil. However, the availability of green methanol at scale remains limited, and the cost of converting vessels to methanol propulsion can be substantial.

While a growing number of methanol-ready vessels have entered service, relatively few have subsequently undergone conversion to methanol propulsion, underscoring the uncertainty that persists across the maritime sector regarding which alternative fuels will ultimately achieve the infrastructure and supply chain maturity needed for widespread adoption.
