Fox News' Joe Concha Demands Absent Sen. Mitch McConnell Return or Resign

Fox News contributor Joe Concha erupted on air Saturday over Sen. Mitch McConnell's (R-KY) months-long health-related absence, demanding that the Kentucky Republican either return to work this month or vacate his seat.

McConnell, 83, who stepped down as Senate Republican leader at the end of 2024 after a record-breaking run atop the conference but remained in the chamber as a rank-and-file senator, has been absent from the Senate since mid-June following his hospitalization, which his office was initially slow to provide details on. Weeks later, it emerged that McConnell had reportedly been found unconscious at his home and administered CPR, prompting widespread speculation that his condition was far more serious than previously known.

Some commentators, including Laura Loomer, a close ally of President Donald Trump and a far-right influencer, even claimed without evidence that McConnell was "officially brain dead."

Rep. James Comer, another Kentucky Republican in Congress, appeared on Fox News' "The Big Weekend Show" on Saturday and said McConnell was expected to return to the Senate sometime in September, citing conversations he had with McConnell's staff. Fox News host Tomi Lahren was not satisfied with that attempt to quell concerns.

"I don't know if that's quite fair to the American people though, that unelected staffers are running the show for Sen. Mitch McConnell," Lahren said. "I think we've got to play it fair here."

Fox News' Lucas Tomlinson agreed with Lahren, noting that McConnell's more than two months away from the Senate was "a long time." Concha then issued a blunt ultimatum.

"I'll say it: If he does not come back in September, he needs to step down! Enough of this already!" Concha said. "How many months has it been since we even heard from him directly? I don't want to see proof-of-life photos from a hospital bed anymore, he needs to get in front of a microphone and prove that he can do this job! And if he can't, he needs to step aside, period!"

The calls for McConnell to account publicly come amid heightened scrutiny of senators' health and fitness in recent years, including visible freezing episodes McConnell experienced in 2023 that fueled earlier questions about his continued service. Any resignation would also carry immediate political stakes: under Kentucky law, a Senate vacancy is filled by the governor, and Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear would be positioned to appoint a successor to the seat McConnell has held since 1985, a scenario that would hand Republicans a high-profile fight over the chamber's narrow margin.
