Coinbase Bridges AI Agent Economy with Payments, Trading Tools, and Developer SDK
U.S.-listed cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase (COIN) is rolling out a suite of features this week designed to close what it sees as key gaps in the AI agentic economy. The initiatives span three audiences: businesses seeking to accept agent-driven payments, exchange users deploying agents for trading and research, and developers building agent-based infrastructure.
The rollout focuses on the practical plumbing needed for agents to move from research or automation tools into systems that can initiate payments, monitor orders, and connect to developer services. Coinbase is positioning the effort around both sides of agent activity: giving agents a way to transact and giving humans visibility into what those agents are doing.
Businesses Can Now Accept Agent Payments via x402
Coinbase Business users will now be able to accept payments from AI agents through the x402 protocol, which was developed and incubated by the exchange. According to a press release on Thursday, businesses can allow an agent to pay in USDC with no additional setup required, with the payment flow powered by Coinbase Payments.
Sid Coelho-Prabhu, Head of Coinbase Business, drew an analogy to traditional commerce during an interview, noting that any shopping scenario involves two parties: a shopper with a credit card and bank account visiting a merchant equipped with a point-of-sale system and bank account, with the two reaching agreement at checkout.
"We are delivering that experience for the new online agentic economy," Coelho-Prabhu said. "Agents, on one side of the transaction, will go and read the Coinbase developer docs, create a wallet for themselves, and are ready to shop. Then we empower businesses so that everything in their inventory is now available on the internet through this agent-friendly checkout flow."

Enhanced Trading Views for Agent Users
For users of the exchange, Coinbase is introducing new trading views within Coinbase for Agents. A live order list streams an agent's open and active orders in real time, displaying status, price, and size so that users can supervise each action, according to a press release.
The feature is designed to put agentic trading directly at users' fingertips, with agents receiving real-time market data and the ability to act on market conditions autonomously. The supervision layer is central to the product framing: the order list gives users a real-time view of what an agent has open or active rather than leaving agent execution as an opaque background process.
"Tell it what you want in plain English – 'buy ETH if it dips 5%,' 'sell when my order fills' – and it watches the market and executes for you. The same WebSocket data that powers institutional desks is now accessible through natural language," Coinbase said.
x402 SDK for Developers
For the developer community, Coinbase Developer Platform has released a new x402 SDK. Builders can now integrate x402 payment acceptance into any API, MCP server, or web service in just three lines of code, streamlining the process of enabling agent-based payment flows across a wide range of applications.
By addressing merchants, exchange users, and developers in the same release cycle, Coinbase is trying to make x402 useful across more than one point in the agent workflow: payment acceptance for businesses, monitored execution for users, and integration tools for builders.
