French container shipping giant CMA CGM has added another methanol-fuelled container vessel to its growing fleet of alternative-fuel ships.
The 15,000 TEU container ship was named CMA CGM Roi Arthur at a naming ceremony, the company announced in a LinkedIn post today.
CMA CGM, headquartered in Marseille, is one of the world's largest container shipping lines and has been actively expanding its fleet of vessels powered by alternative fuels. The addition of the CMA CGM Roi Arthur marks the company's latest step in deploying methanol-capable tonnage as the maritime industry seeks to reduce its environmental footprint. International shipping accounts for roughly 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, placing carriers under increasing pressure from regulators and cargo owners to decarbonize.
The container shipping sector has accounted for a significant share of global methanol-fuelled vessel orders in recent years. As more of these ships enter service, demand for green methanol as a marine fuel is widely expected to increase, prompting suppliers and ports to scale up bunkering infrastructure. However, the environmental benefit of methanol-fuelled vessels depends largely on fuel sourcing: methanol produced from renewable feedstocks can deliver substantial lifecycle emissions reductions, while conventional methanol derived from fossil natural gas offers more modest gains. Production capacity for renewable methanol currently remains limited relative to the volume of methanol-capable tonnage on order.
In June, CMA CGM took delivery of another 15,000 TEU methanol-fuelled container ship, continuing a steady cadence of new vessel inductions.
Beyond methanol, CMA CGM has also invested heavily in LNG-fuelled vessels. In March, the company added its largest LNG-fuelled container ship to its fleet, underscoring a dual-track strategy of adopting multiple alternative fuel pathways as the industry waits for consensus on which low-carbon fuels will achieve scale.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping, including a goal to peak emissions as soon as possible and to reach net zero by or around 2050. Major carriers such as CMA CGM, Maersk, and Hapag-Lloyd have responded by ordering vessels capable of running on methanol, LNG, and other low-carbon fuels, though questions remain about whether global bunkering infrastructure and renewable fuel supply chains can keep pace with the orderbook.
