A new Charles Schwab survey suggests U.S. investors are more eager to add to their cryptocurrency holdings than to any other asset class, with interest outpacing stocks, ETFs, bonds, and mutual funds.
The brokerage's 2026 Modern Wealth Survey, released Wednesday, found that six in 10 current cryptocurrency investors plan to invest more over the next 12 months — a higher share than owners of any other investment type measured, including ETFs (56%), stocks (52%), bonds (42%), and mutual funds (41%).
"Existing cryptocurrency investors are certainly leaning in, particularly younger investors who are driving much of the interest and momentum in cryptocurrency," said Joe Vietri, Head of Digital Assets at Charles Schwab, in a statement. "But to me, the bigger story is that cryptocurrency is increasingly viewed as a complement to traditional investments."
The findings come as Charles Schwab, the country's largest custodian for registered investment advisors, expands its digital asset offerings. Earlier this year, the firm began a phased rollout of Schwab Crypto to retail clients, giving them direct access to bitcoin trading along with educational content and professional support. Schwab also offers crypto-linked exchange-traded funds, bitcoin futures, and its own Schwab Crypto Thematic Index ETF.
CEO Rick Wurster has said Schwab clients hold more than 20% of all crypto exchange-traded products across the industry — a footprint that underscores how much existing digital-asset exposure already runs through traditional brokerage accounts.
Wednesday's report also found that one in five Americans own cryptocurrency today, while another one in five say they do not own any but are interested in buying it. Among investors, nearly half hold cryptocurrency. Taken together, the figures describe an existing ownership base of about one in five Americans alongside a similarly sized group of prospective buyers.
Millennials are the generation most likely to own cryptocurrency, with ownership at a rate more than four times that of Boomers — a gap that echoes Vietri's observation that younger investors are driving much of the momentum in the asset class.
The online survey was conducted by Logica Research from August 24 to September 17, 2026, among a national sample of 2,000 Americans ages 21 to 75. As with any survey, the results capture stated intentions for the year ahead rather than actual allocations. The 12-month window also overlaps with Schwab's phased rollout of direct bitcoin trading, a period in which to watch whether that stated coincides with broader adoption of crypto through conventional brokerage channels.
