Chainlink Launches CustodySync to Link Institutional Custody With DeFi Lending

Chainlink has launched CustodySync, a new solution that enables qualified custodians to give institutional clients access to decentralized finance (DeFi) lending markets while digital assets remain under existing custody arrangements. Anchorage Digital Bank is serving as the launch partner for the initiative. Qualified custodians are regulated institutions, typically banks and trust companies, that hold client assets under applicable rules.

The service is designed to let institutions borrow against digital assets held by qualified custodians without moving those assets out of custody. It addresses a longstanding barrier to institutional DeFi participation: lending opportunities have often required firms to transfer assets into blockchain-based protocols, a step that can conflict with regulatory requirements and internal risk controls.

Bridging the gap between custody and DeFi

Chainlink estimates that digital assets held in custody total roughly $700 billion — less than 0.5% of the $250 trillion in traditional assets under custody. By comparison, DeFi lending markets hold more than $80 billion in deposits and carry over $30 billion in active loans. The gap underscores the potential for greater institutional participation in on-chain lending.

Banks, investment firms, and other institutions, however, may be required by regulations, investment mandates, or internal policies to keep assets with qualified custodians. Relocating those holdings into DeFi protocols can create compliance challenges and expose institutions to smart contract risks they are not permitted to assume directly.

Historically, custody providers and blockchain lending protocols have also operated on separate systems. Custodians generally monitor collateral balances and loan-to-value ratios within their own infrastructure, while lending protocols track positions on-chain. Data mismatches or communication lags can leave the two systems reporting conflicting figures for the same loan.

Such inconsistencies can complicate decisions on margin calls and liquidations. A protocol might liquidate a position that remains adequately collateralized, or delay action until the collateral no longer covers the outstanding loan.

Shared data throughout the lending process

CustodySync is designed to keep custodians and DeFi lending markets aligned from the initial collateral deposit and borrowing stage through repayment and potential liquidation. Chainlink provides verified data intended to give both parties a consistent view of the loan and its collateral.

The solution aims to preserve custodial control of institutional assets while allowing borrowers to access blockchain-based lending markets. The arrangement could help institutions put digital asset holdings to work more efficiently without abandoning existing custody structures.

By coordinating information between custodians and on-chain protocols, the service seeks to reduce the operational friction of managing collateral across separate financial systems. Consistent information about loan positions may also help participants make more reliable decisions when collateral values shift or lending conditions require intervention.

Anchorage Digital provides collateral management infrastructure

Anchorage Digital is backing the launch with its custodial infrastructure and Atlas Collateral Management product, both built to work alongside participating lending protocols.

The arrangement follows a three-party model familiar from traditional institutional financial markets. Anchorage Digital acts as the appointed collateral agent for the lending protocols — a role, common in traditional markets, in which a designated party administers pledged collateral on behalf of the counterparties — while institutions retain their established custody relationships and gain access to borrowing opportunities.

This structure is intended to make DeFi lending more compatible with institutional requirements around asset control, risk management, and operational oversight. Rather than choosing between keeping assets with a qualified custodian and accessing decentralized lending markets, eligible institutions could pursue both through a coordinated framework.

The debut of CustodySync reflects a broader push to connect traditional institutional custody arrangements with blockchain-based financial services. Wider adoption will depend on participation from custodians and lending protocols, as well as institutions' assessments of the associated operational, regulatory, and technology risks. As the framework moves past launch, the indicators to watch are whether additional qualified custodians and lending protocols integrate with CustodySync, and whether eligible institutions begin borrowing under the arrangement.
