Global cryptocurrency activity proved more resilient than prices during the latest market downturn, with on-chain economic activity slipping just 1.6% to $9.4 trillion in the 12 months to June 2026, even as total crypto market capitalization contracted by 50%. The findings come from the 2026 Global Crypto Adoption Index, the latest annual study by blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis, and suggest that crypto usage is becoming less dependent on market speculation.

The size breakdown of on-chain transfers points to broadening participation. Transfers of less than $100 rose 78.4%, while transactions between $100 and $1,000 increased 58.6%. At the other end of the scale, transfers of $1 million or more fell only 7.2%, indicating relatively resilient institutional activity.

Stablecoins — tokens designed to hold a steady value, typically pegged to a fiat currency — were a major driver of this resilience. Cross-border stablecoin transfers rose 77.5% to $220.3 billion, while estimated monthly-border stablecoin flows more than doubled to $24 billion in June 2026, up from $11 billion in January 2025. The average transaction size was about $3,000 — a level consistent with payments, remittances, supplier settlements and savings rather than institutional trading.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) activity also surged. Value transferred directly between personal wallets within countries jumped 302.9% to $228.7 billion, while service inflows to exchanges, DeFi protocols and other crypto businesses fell 4.3% — the two categories are tracked separately in the index, and the gap points to activity concentrated in user-to-user channels rather than intermediated platforms. Stablecoins accounted for 96% of domestic P2P activity, with stablecoin P2P flows rising 377.7% over the period.

Emerging Markets Led Adoption

Brazil ranked first globally in grassroots crypto adoption, followed by the United States and Nigeria. Nigeria ranked first worldwide for both domestic P2P activity and cross-border flows, while South Africa ranked ninth overall, fourth in P2P activity and third in cross-border flows. Grassroots measures like these spotlight adoption among everyday users rather than raw institutional volume — consistent with the global surge in small-value transfers.

Chainalysis said Sub-Saharan Africa recorded the world's fastest adoption growth, driven largely by strong P2P activity. The 2026 index covers 117 countries and measures service flows, domestic P2P transfers, cross-border flows and on-chain balances. As an annual study, it serves as a recurring benchmark for whether these regional patterns hold in future editions.

The broader shift is significant: while crypto balances fell sharply during the market downturn, stablecoin balances held between $98 billion and $109 billion, reaching 22.5% of measured global on-chain balances by June 2026.
