Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville, best known for managing Bill Clinton's successful 1992 presidential campaign, predicted that President Donald Trump will resign before April 15 following the November midterms, citing what he described as an accelerating physical and emotional deterioration.

Speaking during a Q&A segment on the podcast Politics War Room, Carville fielded a question from a viewer who referenced his earlier prediction that Trump would step down after the midterms. The viewer raised concerns that Trump might attempt to run again in 2028, citing a interpretation of the 22nd Amendment — ratified in 1951 following Franklin D. Roosevelt's four terms, it limits an elected president to two terms — as potentially allowing ten total years of service. That ten-year ceiling applies only to a vice president or other successor who assumes office mid-term and then wins election twice; having been elected twice outright, Trump is ineligible to run again under the amendment.

"First of all, of all the things that you have to worry about, Trump running in 2028 is not one of them," Carville responded. "I'm watching him in real time, and I think this man is deteriorating physically and emotionally at a rate that's exponential. It's not linear."

Beyond the matter of deterioration, Carville predicted that Trump will face a challenge he has never previously encountered in his political career: irrelevance and isolation. Carville, who has also forecast a sweeping Republican defeat in the November midterms, argued that Trump's post-election standing would rapidly diminish.

"This is going to be accelerated by the fact that after November, he is going to be dealing with something he hasn't dealt with in his time in politics," Carville said. "He's going to be irrelevant. He's not just going to be irrelevant. It's going to be people are not going to want to be around him. They're not going to care what he has to say."

Because nobody will "even going to want to affirmatively hear" Trump, he "will walk away prior to April 15th," Carville said.

Carville added that recent events have reinforced his conviction: "I am more convinced after watching this fiasco with Senator Lindsey Graham," he said, referring to Trump's speech at the late senator's funeral.

The only presidential resignation in American history remains Richard Nixon's 1974 departure amid the Watergate scandal, meaning Carville's prediction — first advanced on his podcast earlier this year — would mark an unprecedented event if it comes to pass. His forecast is one of several competing assessments of Trump's political future circulating among Democratic strategists ahead of the midterms.
