Texas brothers sentenced to over 15 years in prison for $8 million armed crypto robbery and kidnapping

Raymond Christian Garcia and Isiah Angelo Garcia, both of Waller, Texas, have been sentenced to 180 months (15 years) and 186 months (15 years and six months) in prison, respectively, for the armed robbery of cryptocurrency and the kidnapping of a family in Grant, Minnesota.

US District Judge Donovan W. Frank imposed the sentences on Thursday, according to a Friday news release from the US Attorney's Office for the District of Minnesota. The brothers had pleaded guilty in June.

Court documents state that on Sept. 19, 2025, the brothers — who had traveled from Texas to Minnesota — kidnapped Victim 1 and his family inside their home at gunpoint. The pair zip-tied the family and held them captive for more than nine hours while demanding access to Victim 1's cryptocurrency accounts.

When the haul fell short of what the brothers expected, they forced Victim 1 to drive to a cabin in upstate Minnesota, where they obtained additional cryptocurrency from other devices, bringing the total taken to more than $8 million.

The brothers fled after the victim's son called 911, and police later identified and arrested them near Houston.

Brothers terrorized family at gunpoint

“Raymond and Isiah Garcia violated the sanctity of a home, abducted a victim, terrorized a family at gunpoint for hours, and disrupted an entire community in a brazen act of violence and greed,” said Christopher D. Dotson, special agent in charge of the FBI's Minneapolis Field Office.

Cointelegraph reported in July that home invasions had become the most common form of crypto wrench attack during the first half of 2026, rising to 20 publicly reported incidents from just one a year earlier, according to blockchain security firm CertiK. Wrench attacks involve the use of physical force or coercion, rather than remote hacking, to force holders to surrender access to their digital assets — the method at the heart of this case, in which the brothers held a family at gunpoint while demanding access to cryptocurrency accounts.

CertiK said in July that it verified 52 wrench attacks worldwide in the first half of 2026, up 33% from 39 incidents during the same period in 2025, while kidnappings rose to 16 from 12. A separate Cointelegraph Magazine investigation counted 90 attacks on Bitcoin holders in France over seven months, calling the country the world's most dangerous place for Bitcoiners.
