BitMart to Shut Down Trading After Nearly Nine Years

Crypto exchange BitMart, once one of the industry’s best-known venues for listing emerging altcoins, will wind down its trading operations after nearly nine years in business. The closure marks the end of a platform that operated through multiple crypto market cycles before losing ground to larger competitors.

Founded in 2017 by Sheldon Xia during the ICO boom, BitMart built its reputation as a destination for retail traders looking to access hundreds of newly launched cryptocurrencies before they were listed on larger exchanges. The platform expanded quickly during the 2020-2021 bull market, adding spot trading, futures, staking, lending and NFT services while growing its user base across more than 180 countries.

BitMart also survived one of the largest crypto security breaches of its time. In December 2021, hackers stole about $196 million in digital assets from the exchange’s hot wallets. The company later resumed operations after pledging to reimburse affected users, though the incident became one of the defining events in BitMart’s history.

The exchange said it will halt all trading on August 26, 2026, and fully cease operations on January 31, 2027. BitMart cited a review of its operating conditions, the market environment and its future strategic direction, but did not provide further details.

Deposits and new user registrations have already been suspended. Withdrawals will remain available until the platform’s final shutdown date. The timeline gives existing users a defined window to close positions and move assets off the platform before services are fully discontinued.

The announcement prompted a sharp selloff in BitMart’s native BMX token, which lost nearly half of its value after the news.

BitMart’s closure comes as the centralized exchange sector continues to consolidate around a small group of dominant global platforms. That shift has made it increasingly difficult for mid-sized exchanges, which previously differentiated themselves through broad token listings, to compete on liquidity, compliance costs, security expectations and institutional services.
