The cryptocurrency market recovered on October 21, with Bitcoin gaining 2% and Zcash outperforming as major digital assets rebounded. Bitcoin approached $85,000 during the recovery, while Santiment reported rising derivatives open interest across Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana.
According to Santiment’s snapshot, the three cryptocurrencies had approximately $41.6 billion in combined open interest. The analytics firm said that rising derivatives exposure reflected stronger participation, but warned that increased leverage could amplify losses if prices reversed suddenly. Santiment shared the data in a post on X.
The recovery followed a difficult October for digital assets, as investors assessed renewed demand alongside broader macroeconomic and market risks.
Bitcoin reaches its highest level of the week
Bitcoin rose 2.5% to $84,800, reaching its highest price of the week. The move marked a turnaround for the largest cryptocurrency, which had traded mostly near $80,000 for much of the month.
Other major cryptocurrencies also advanced. Ethereum briefly moved above $2,500, while Solana touched $109. The gains lifted the total cryptocurrency market capitalization to $2.82 trillion.
The stronger performance came after several days of declining prices as the crypto market faced ongoing macroeconomic pressures. October has historically been Bitcoin’s best-performing month, and the asset reached its all-time high around this time last year. A repeat of that performance has not appeared likely so far, although market indicators have improved.
The Crypto Fear and Greed Index stood at 55 out of 100, a neutral reading but an improvement from 48 out of 100 at the end of the previous week.
Open interest rises alongside prices
Additional signs of increased activity emerged among crypto derivatives traders. Santiment analysts said open interest was rising at the same time as prices recovered. Open interest measures the total value of outstanding derivative contracts, which makes it a widely used gauge of how much capital and leverage are positioned in the market at any given time.
The analysts reported open interest of approximately $23.4 billion for Bitcoin, $15.5 billion for Ethereum, and $2.7 billion for Solana. The figures indicate that traders were using more capital and leverage in the derivatives market.
“Rising open interest generally signals greater participation and willingness to take risk, especially when it grows alongside price,” the analysts said.
Santiment also noted that Ethereum had recorded the most consistent increase in open interest since August, while Solana’s open interest had been more volatile.
The data also pointed to a broader shift toward altcoin derivatives. That change coincided with a broader increase in the value of altcoins relative to Bitcoin. CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season Index was at 58 out of 100, meaning that 58 major-cap altcoins had outperformed Bitcoin over the previous 90 days. The index defines altcoin season as beginning at 75 out of 100.
Despite the increased participation associated with higher open interest, analysts warned that greater leverage could increase market risks. Liquidations occur when exchanges forcibly close leveraged positions after losses erode a trader’s margin, and clusters of forced closures can reinforce one another as prices move further against remaining positions. That mechanism is why a sudden reversal could trigger deeper liquidations and put additional pressure on prices, making the combination of rising open interest and price levels a closely watched measure of how exposed the market is to volatility.
