Crypto Market Outlook: Bitcoin, Ethereum and XRP Face Critical Fed Test
Key Takeaways
- •Bitcoin traded near $82,150 on Oct. 16, recovering from this week's low near $79,677, after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's comments reduced expectations for an October rate hike.
- •September U.S. inflation came in above forecasts, with headline CPI at 3.7% and core CPI at 2.7%, keeping price pressures above the Federal Reserve's 2.0% target.
- •Spot Bitcoin ETFs logged more than $534 million in outflows this month, including $532.31 million in net outflows through Oct. 15, reflecting weakening institutional demand.
- •Bitcoin has formed a golden cross and holds key support, positioning it for a potential bullish breakout toward the $87,270 resistance level.
- •Ethereum is holding significant support at $2,353 with potential upside toward $2,806, while XRP faces a double-top pattern and bearish RSI divergence that raise the risk of a decline toward $1.00.

The cryptocurrency market showed signs of stabilization on Oct. 16 as investors reassessed the Federal Reserve's interest rate outlook. Bitcoin traded near $82,150, recovering from this week's reported low near $79,677, while Ethereum rebounded toward $2,450 and XRP attempted to recover from its recent decline.
The modest recovery followed comments from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh that reduced expectations for another October rate increase. Rate expectations matter for crypto traders because the Fed's policy path helps shape the liquidity backdrop and risk appetite across financial markets. Even so, the three major cryptocurrencies continue to face sharply different technical setups, with Bitcoin confronting resistance near $87,270 while Ethereum and XRP present competing bullish and bearish scenarios. Investors are also tracking persistent inflation and weakening demand for cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
Inflation Data Weighs as Odds of an October Fed Hike Fade
Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP prices have moved sideways as investors digest the latest consumer inflation report and the declining odds that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates this month.
The United States published strong consumer and producer inflation data. Headline and core consumer inflation rose 3.7% and 2.7% in September, respectively, both above analyst expectations. The headline producer price index likewise came in hotter than forecast. With price pressures moving further from the Federal Reserve's 2.0% target, the readings would, in theory, push officials toward a hike later this year.
There are, however, signs that the central bank will not move this month. Speaking at an International Monetary Fund meeting, Warsh sounded noncommittal on whether the Fed will raise rates in October. On the prediction platforms Polymarket and Kalshi, the implied odds of an October hike have continued to fall. Attention now shifts to the Fed's October decision, the next major event on the policy calendar for traders across risk assets.
Bitcoin: Support Test Precedes Possible Push Toward $87,270
Bitcoin has moved sideways in the past few weeks, a performance that has coincided with waning ETF demand. Data from SosoValue shows these funds have recorded more than $534 million in outflows this month. They logged $532.31 million in net outflows through Oct. 15 despite modest inflows on Thursday. In aggregate, the funds have taken in over $56.8 billion in cumulative inflows and now hold $105.7 billion in assets. Spot Bitcoin ETFs, which began trading in the United States in January 2024, have since become a widely cited gauge of institutional participation in the market.
The daily chart shows Bitcoin has staged a strong comeback over recent months, soaring from a low of $57,725 in July to a high of $87,270. The cryptocurrency has settled at an important support level that coincides with the highest points reached in May and on September 9 of this year. It has also formed a golden cross pattern, a common bullish continuation signal, and remains above the Supertrend indicator.
Bitcoin therefore looks likely to attempt a bullish breakout toward the key resistance level at $87,270. A decisive move above that level would point to further gains.
Ethereum: Holding a Historically Significant Support Zone
Ethereum has traded within a narrow range in recent days, changing hands at $2,450 on Friday and down modestly from last month's high of $2,800. The token is sitting at the important level of $2,353, which marked its lowest points on August 23, September 2, and September 15, a sign that it has found strong support. The same level also served as its highest point on April 18 of this year.
With that support intact, the token may bounce back toward the key resistance level of $2,806. A move above $2,806 would raise the odds of an advance toward $3,000.
XRP: Double-Top Risk Clouds the Outlook
XRP has been stuck in a tight range in recent sessions and has settled at its 100-day exponential moving average (EMA). The risk, however, is that the token has formed a double-top pattern, a formation that often precedes a bearish reversal. A bearish divergence has also emerged, with the relative strength index (RSI) trending downward.
XRP therefore looks likely to attempt a bearish breakout toward the key support level of $1.00 in the near term. The alternative scenario is a rebound that carries the token to the psychological level of $1.500.
