Bitcoin.com Adds UAE-Registered USDU Stablecoin to Its Self-Custodial Wallet
Key Takeaways
- •Bitcoin.com is adding USDU, a US dollar-backed stablecoin issued by Abu Dhabi-based Universal Digital, to its self-custodial web and mobile wallet.
- •USDU is the first and currently only Foreign Payment Token registered under the UAE central bank's Payment Token Services Regulation, making it the only non-fiat instrument permitted for digital asset and derivative payments in the UAE.
- •Wallet users will initially be able to hold, send, and receive the Ethereum-based stablecoin, with swap and buy-and-sell functionality expected later through third-party providers, while Bitcoin.com plans to accept USDU for designated services and enable user-to-merchant payments subject to jurisdictional availability.
- •Universal Digital is also regulated by the Abu Dhabi Global Market's Financial Services Regulatory Authority to issue fiat-referenced tokens.
- •The integration forms part of USDU's broader distribution push, following Zodia Custody's institutional support in July and the launch of a USDT-USDU liquidity pool on Uniswap in August.

Bitcoin.com, a long-running crypto information and services platform, is adding USDU, a US dollar-backed stablecoin registered with the Central Bank of the UAE, to its self-custodial web and mobile wallet.
USDU is issued by Abu Dhabi-based Universal Digital and carries a notable regulatory distinction: it is the first, and currently the only, Foreign Payment Token registered under the UAE central bank's Payment Token Services Regulation. Universal is additionally regulated by the Abu Dhabi Global Market's Financial Services Regulatory Authority to issue fiat-referenced tokens, one of several regimes — alongside Dubai's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority — that shape the country's digital asset sector.
According to Wednesday's announcement, the Ethereum-based stablecoin will let wallet users hold, send, and receive USDU, while swap and buy-and-sell functionality is expected to be added later through third-party providers.
Bitcoin.com said it plans to accept USDU for designated services and to work toward enabling payments between users and merchants across its products, though availability will vary by jurisdiction.
Universal launched USDU in January. Under the country's Payment Token Services Regulation, payments for digital assets and digital asset derivatives may only be made in fiat or a registered Foreign Payment Token — a rule that, given USDU's sole registration, currently leaves it as the only non-fiat instrument permitted for such payments in the UAE.
The Bitcoin.com integration forms part of a broader distribution push for USDU. In July, Zodia Custody, a digital asset custodian backed by Standard Chartered, added support for the stablecoin, allowing institutional clients to hold and transfer it. In August, a USDT-USDU liquidity pool launched on Uniswap, adding decentralized liquidity for the token. The expansion comes as stablecoin rules take shape across major jurisdictions, including the EU's MiCA framework and the US GENIUS Act signed into law in July 2025.
