Bitcoin extends rally toward $80,000 as traders eye swing area and retracement target

Author: ForexLive·

Key Takeaways

  • Bitcoin rose 3.0% to trade near $79,765, extending a rally of more than 36% from its June bottom of $57,735.
  • The cryptocurrency has cleared its 100-day moving average at $66,113 and its 200-day moving average at $69,092, shifting the technical bias firmly to the upside.
  • Key upside hurdles for traders include a November 2025 swing area at $80,560, a prior swing high at $82,833, and the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement around $83,918.
  • The 38.2% retracement is measured from the slide between Bitcoin's all-time high above $125,000 in October 2025 and its June low, and a sustained break above it is viewed as the minimum requirement for buyers to gain control of the longer-term trend.
  • A friendlier U.S. regulatory stance, including a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve established by executive order in March 2025, and renewed inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs approved in January 2024 have bolstered institutional demand.

Bitcoin is trading up $2,300, or 3.0%, at $79,765, after touching an intraday high of $79,989 — just short of the natural resistance at the $80,000 level. The advance extends a recovery that began at the end of June, when the cryptocurrency bottomed at $57,735; since then, it has rallied more than 36%.

The latest move higher follows an extended period of consolidation. From July 4 through August 18, Bitcoin traded above and below its 100- and 200-bar moving averages on the 4-hour chart as buyers and sellers battled for control. Since then, buyers have taken a firmer grip.

The price has now cleared both its 100-day moving average, currently at $66,113, and its 200-day moving average at $69,092 — two of the most widely watched trend benchmarks among traders and longer-term investors. Those breaks shifted the technical bias more firmly to the upside and opened the door for the latest run toward $80,000.

Bitcoin is now approaching the lower end of an important swing area dating back to November 2025 at $80,560. A break above that level would put two further targets in play:

  • $82,833 — a prior swing high
  • $83,916 — the 38.2% retracement of the decline from the all-time high

The 38.2% retracement carries particular weight. Fibonacci retracements — the standard grid of 23.6%, 38.2%, 50% and 61.8% levels — are one of the most widely used tools for judging how far a price recovers within a larger trend, and the 38.2% line is often treated as the first serious test of a recovery's staying power. Here it is measured against the slide from Bitcoin's all-time high — a record set above $125,000 in October 2025 — to the June bottom at $57,735. If buyers are to take back more control from the longer-term bearish trend, getting above that retracement is viewed as a minimum requirement. A sustained break above $83,918 would strengthen the bullish technical picture and give buyers greater confidence that the recovery has more room to run; under the same framework, deeper levels such as the 50% retracement would only come into view beyond it. Absent such a move, however, the rally can still be viewed as a plain-vanilla correction within the broader trend move lower.

The fundamental backdrop has also grown increasingly supportive. A much friendlier U.S. government and regulatory environment toward cryptocurrencies — including the creation of a U.S. Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, established by executive order in March 2025 — has helped further legitimize Bitcoin as a strategic asset. Moves toward clearer crypto regulation have also reduced some of the uncertainty that previously limited institutional participation.

Institutional demand has strengthened as well, highlighted by renewed inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs. Those funds, approved by U.S. regulators in January 2024, hold Bitcoin directly and let institutions gain exposure through conventional brokerage and advisory channels. Meanwhile, lower Treasury yields and concerns surrounding government debt and potential currency debasement have increased demand for scarce alternative assets, benefiting both Bitcoin and gold. Bitcoin's fixed supply — the protocol caps it at 21 million coins — along with growing institutional acceptance and some short covering as the price has accelerated higher has provided an additional tailwind for the rally.

For traders, $80,560, $82,833 and especially $83,918 now stand as the key upside hurdles. Getting above the 38.2% retracement at $83,918 would be an important technical step toward giving buyers more control.
