Beefeater to Close All 106 UK Restaurants as Whitbread Restructures

Beefeater, the 52-year-old British restaurant chain known for family-friendly steakhouse meals, is set to close all of its remaining UK locations as parent company Whitbread moves ahead with a wider restructuring plan.

Although market data indicates that the global dining-out market is expected to rise from $1.9 trillion today to more than $3 trillion by 2030, many restaurant chains that once thrived in earlier eras are now under pressure from changing consumer preferences and rising costs. In the United States, chains including Smokey Bones, Peet's Coffee, and Joe's Crab Shack have collectively closed dozens of locations this year. In the United Kingdom, Leon and The Real Greek both nearly halved their store counts in 2026 after periods of rapid expansion.

Beefeater opened its first restaurant in Enfield, in Greater London, in 1974. Over the decades, it became known as a family-oriented steakhouse chain serving grilled steak cuts, burgers, and fish and chips at relatively accessible prices.

Beefeater to shut 106 restaurant locations across the UK

At its peak, Beefeater operated about 140 standalone and Brewers Fayre brewery-attached locations in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Whitbread has now confirmed plans to close the chain's remaining 106 restaurants by September, citing soaring operating costs and a broader effort to reshape its business around its hotel operations.

Earlier this year, Whitbread announced a restructuring plan aimed at reducing annual costs by £250 million, or about $333 million. Premier Inn is Whitbread's largest business. Under the current strategy, some locations will be converted into hotel rooms, others will become integrated unbranded hotel restaurants, and additional sites will be sold in a move the company says could free up £1.5 billion, or about $2 billion.

In a statement about the closures, Whitbread said, "As you may have seen, we have recently announced changes to our business, which is resulting in the closure of our Branded Restaurants. This means that on Thursday 10 September 2026 your local Beefeater and all other UK Beefeaters will close."

For customers who collected points through repeated visits, the Beefeater loyalty scheme will end on Aug. 31.

Whitbread says it will try to redeploy affected workers

Beefeater employed about 3,800 people in 2026. Whitbread said some of those workers may be able to move into roles elsewhere in its hospitality portfolio or in new hotel restaurants, but it also acknowledged that the closures will lead to significant job losses.

In a letter sent to Beefeater rewards members, the company said, "We recognise [UK spelling] the impact of this proposal on colleagues who work at the affected sites. As a business which recruits around 15,000 people every year, we expect to be able to retain a significant proportion of those affected and will be looking to redeploy as many of our impacted colleagues as possible."

Beefeater has operated for 54 years and carried nostalgic significance for many people in the UK, especially those who remember visiting the chain for family outings or special occasions in smaller towns. Its closure also underscores how legacy dining brands are being reassessed in an environment where operators are weighing labor, energy, and property costs against the value of keeping large-format restaurant estates open.

"Until I went to university the only restaurant I'd ever been to was a Beefeater," one woman wrote on Reddit in response to the closures. "We'd go for various family birthdays. I absolutely loved it."
