Astra Microwave Products Ltd saw its shares climb to a record high after the company secured a major order valued at ₹2,205 crore from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The order marks a significant milestone for the Hyderabad-based defence electronics firm, which specialises in microwave and radio-frequency components for the aerospace, defence, and telecommunications sectors. The contract also underscores the broader momentum in India's defence electronics sector, where the government has been pushing for greater self-reliance under its Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, driving demand for domestically designed radar, electronic warfare, and missile-guidance sub-systems.

Order Scope and Timeline

The contract encompasses the procurement of 122 Anti-Aircraft Auxiliary Units (AAAU) and 121 Interface Frames intended for India's indigenous Uttam Radar programme. The Uttam is an active electronically scanned array (AESA) fire-control radar developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the Tejas series of light combat aircraft. AESA radars, which electronically steer beams without moving parts, are considered a critical capability for modern fighter aircraft and are featured on leading platforms worldwide. Execution of the order is scheduled to take place over the next five years, aligning with the production timeline of the Tejas Mk-1A and subsequent variants.

HAL Order Book Swells

The award adds to HAL's growing order pipeline as the state-owned aerospace manufacturer continues to expand its production of indigenous defence platforms. HAL, listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), serves as a primary integrator for multiple Indian Air Force and Indian Navy programmes. The company has in recent years secured large contracts including the ₹48,000 crore deal for 83 LCA Tejas Mk-1A aircraft, reflecting the armed forces' sustained commitment to fleet modernisation through domestic platforms.

Management Outlook

The order reinforces Astra Microwave's position as a key supplier in India's defence electronics supply chain. The company, traded on Indian exchanges under the ticker ASTRAMICRO, has been a regular participant in RF and microwave sub-system contracts tied to domestic radar, electronic warfare, and missile-guidance programmes. As India continues to expand its indigenous fighter and surveillance capabilities, suppliers of specialised microwave components are expected to see recurring demand across multiple DRDO-led and HAL-integrated programmes.
