Arthur Hayes Details Flop Network's AI Compute Derivatives Vision After Selling Altcoins
Key Takeaways
- •Arthur Hayes proposed in a Monday Substack essay that the Flop Network could establish a spot price for AI computing power by measuring compute delivered per inference task and pricing it in FLOP tokens.
- •Hayes argued that if Flop becomes the payments network for AI agents, the FLOP/compute exchange rate would serve as a global benchmark for spot compute and could enable derivatives markets.
- •A July 2026 BCG report projected the AI compute market will grow from $360 billion in 2025 to roughly $2.3 trillion by 2030.
- •Hayes said on Saturday that he had sold all of Maelstrom's directional holdings in Ether, Ethena and Uniswap, citing dicey macroeconomic and geopolitical conditions.
- •On-chain analytics firm Lookonchain flagged about $22 million in token sales from Hayes-linked wallets, including $15 million in ETH, $2.7 million in ENA and $2.2 million in UNI.

BitMEX co-founder and Flop Labs CEO Arthur Hayes has detailed how the Flop Network could turn AI computing power into a tradable commodity, two days after selling his altcoin holdings.
In a Monday Substack essay, Hayes proposed measuring the computing power delivered for each AI inference task — the work of running trained AI models to generate outputs — and using transaction data to derive a spot price for compute denominated in Flop (FLOP) tokens, citing the lack of a universal benchmark price for AI computing power.
"If Flop becomes the payments network for AI agents, then it follows that the $FLOP/compute exchange rate will be the global benchmark for spot compute," Hayes wrote, adding that a liquid spot compute market would enable derivatives — contracts whose value is derived from the price of an underlying asset — based on that price.
His essay followed a July 2026 report from analysts at BCG that considered how soon AI computing power could become a commodity. The consultancy projected the market for AI compute will reach roughly $2.3 trillion by 2030, climbing from $360 billion in 2025.
Flop Labs is developing a network that allows AI agents to pay for computing and decentralized memory services. In August, Hayes said Flop was planning a "massive airdrop" in the fourth quarter of 2026 and announced that he would take on the company's CEO role.
Hayes' Flop explainer came in the wake of his statement on Saturday that he had "dumped it all," taking profits on the Ether (ETH), Ethena (ENA) and Uniswap (UNI) token holdings in the directional trading book of Maelstrom, his investment firm, and citing "dicey" macroeconomic and geopolitical conditions.
On-chain analytics firm Lookonchain later flagged about $22 million worth of tokens sold by Hayes-linked wallets, including $15 million in ETH, $2.7 million in ENA, $2.2 million in UNI, $1.2 million in Ether.fi (ETHFI), $398,000 in Aerodrome Finance (AERO), $244,000 in Pendle (PENDLE) and $214,000 in Zama (ZAMA) tokens.
